Yes its possible (and yes I've done it) using a Pac SWI-3 or SWI-X.

SWI-X Guide

I changed the MUTE to On/off and it works seamlessly.

Review the guide and If you have any questions let me know. If you need a unit, you can order through me if you'd like.

can you give me more info on how you changed the mute to on/off? I just got the jvc deck and have a swi-3 hooked up and would love to have the mute function hooked back up...

Racing,

Take a look at my webpage for a schematic of how to use the mute switch with a relay...you can use the relay to turn something on/off as well as it's originally intended idea of muting the sound.

I found one of the drawbacks for powering on and off for muting with this HU was that it takes some time to search the directories of MP3 CD after every power on. It displays "FILE CHECK" while searching and it could be a whole minute before it starts playing. This happens with only the MP3 CDs burned with many subdirectories. If you put all files in one directory (the root directory) then the effect is minimum. Then, there is the great advantage of organizing and searching music, especially when you have 200+ on a CD, when you use the subdirectories and assign the remote buttons in a certain way, but that's for another thread ...

I used a relay for the mute button to control the remote signal to the amp when I installed an amp. This way the HU is kept on but the amp is turned off during the mute. See this thread for how I did.

Agreed...tripping the "remote" like for the amp(s) seems like a better idea imho.

Yes the file search delay can be annoying. When you have the radio on or a regular CD it doesn't matter. On some MP3 heads they do the File search at the time you insert the disc only and start up like a regular CD. Whatever you do remember the diode - stripe side toward the mute wire.

Lucid,

I wondered many times why JVC didn't do exactly what you said about other HUs. That makes a perfect sense. Can you tell us what other brands do the search once at the time of loading? It's not that I am going to buy another unit but ...

The Jensen MP5010 doesn't. It's pretty quick going from song to song about as fast as a regular CD.
