I installed a Kenwood wOOx powered sub (KSC-WA62RC) in the trunk last weekend. I've been reading about this small sub for a couple of years now and always wanted to try it in one of my cars. The S seemed like a perfect car so I shopped eBay and won an auction for a used one for $89.00.
It's a 6" speaker and a 6" passive radiator with an internal amp putting out 50 watts @ 2 ohms. Coming in at 8" X 15", it doesn't take up much space in the trunk at all. Fits nicely on the passenger side shelf. The unit comes with a wired remote that includes a gain control, low pass filter selector, and a phase switch. (see pics below)
I installed it using the provided speaker level harness. Power wires went down the driver's side of the car; signal wires down the passenger side. Install is pretty straightforward. Power from the battery to the harness, tap into the speaker wires and ground wire in the harness at the back of the head unit, and run a remote turn-on lead to the accessory post in the front fuse box. There's an additional ground wire that I mounted using the bolts on the rear strut bar on the passenger side. Plug in the connector and you're done. I mounted the wired remote on the center console lid and ran the connector back to the unit through a hole I drilled in rear of the center console storage compartment.
All I was looking to do was add some bottom end to the stock system and this unit does a fine job. The remote control allows basic tweaking on the fly but I think I've settled on the parameters that work best for me... about 60% on the gain at 80Hz. Prior to installing the wOOx, I had the head unit settings at bass +2 and treble +3 to suit my taste. With the powered sub installed, I've now backed off to bass -2 and treble 0. The clarity and fullness of the music is much improved.
This is not a kick ass, rattle-the-windows unit, but it certainly works fine in our small car. At higher volume it will shake the mirror and you can feel the kick drum in your gut, but you've got to really crank it up. What I enjoy most is I can now hear the bass lines in quieter sections of the music I listen to (mostly classic rock: Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, Little Feat, etc.)
Kenwood has since upgraded the unit with a little more power and I'm sure it's even better than the 2 y/o set up I've installed. If all you want is to fill out the bottom end and avoid the typical amp, sub, sub enclosure install; a unit like this is the answer. Total outlay: about $100.00
I've attached velcro to the bottom feet and it tacks nicely down on the stock carpet. Undo two plugs and it simply lifts out for autoX and track days. Weighs less than 8 lbs.
It will most definitely fit in the spare tire compartment. I had considered that but can't quite take the plunge to run without a spare. It would probably sound even louder/better in there.
