Gmail chat will show the status of the person at the computer. Yellow icon if there's no one doing anything with the computer for 5 minutes or so, green icon if there is computer activity. He's there all right.

I understand you know him and you're trying to defend him, but that's a lot easier for you to do when he hasn't already taken your money with nothing to show for it. For many of us, this was a business transaction, nothing more.
