Laser
First they started showing up in the city police cars, now the county sheriff's have them too... Laser! My V1 works great and tells me I've been tagged, but it's really too late by then. I stumbled upon this site and wondered if anyone has used or heard of this before...

It claims to jam the laser...
If it worked I would probably do it... $350 is a chunk of change, but with the laser guns popping up around me it's kinda making my V1 useless.
Thoughts?

since laser jammers are illegal pretty much everywhere, and when the cop lasers you his gun will freak out, chances are you'll still get pulled over. Then, if you're caught with the laser jammer, that will be a hefty fine and it may be confiscated. Unless the install made it totally invisible, and even then the cop will still be highly suspicious of you. In general I think it will make your life more difficult.
There was a discussion in Car talk about this, but it was locked out.
Laser jammers are in the grey area of the law. When the jammer is working properly (and only very few of them do, K40 does not work, neither the ZR3 notably), they produce an error code on the laser gun, so the officer will know that he/she is being jammed. There is no way to get around this. You will probably have it confiscated. Probably will not be arrested.
As far as which ones work and which once don't, here is one that I am 90% sure will work as advertised. This one uses the same innards that the laser guns use (same company).

I would not get one. Keep your V1 on all the time and you have about a 50% chance against laser.

laser jaming is not illegal (n america), for gods sake its only a bunch of inexpensive led's.
if the target is way far off the jammer might stall detection and give time for your detector's alarm to go off. the cop may at that point just pick another vehicle. as the car gets near, the cop can pick specific parts of of the target to get a good return signal, typically headlamps, licnese plate, bumper, flat reflective surfaces. the ladar will also work off the rear of the car, so you dont know which lanes the cop is targeting.
i wuld not want to have to depend on this scheem working.
better to spend the money elsewhere: maybe a tack day for you and the car.

Laser jammers are not illegal, they are simply emitting light. You might piss off the cop and still get pulled over though. I may have the wrong model, but I think the K40 has a delay, it will only jam for 5 seconds then turns off, so its supposed to be harder to detect. I have a few friends with them, and they help, but they certainly don't make you immune.
That LaserVeil coating works real well though. I can't recall the web site taht reviewed it though.

According to the tests on the Blinder it does work with some exception:
Not effective when distance is greated that 1000 feet (current laser speed guns can reach out to 2500 feet)
All laser speed guns will report a jamming error code to the operator (this equals a pissed off cop).
That LaserVeil stuff looks pretty cool - but not sure I would want to paint it all over my car. Perhaps coat my Colgan bra with it though!

As some of you may or may not know(from what I've read here) Lasers are controlled in the USA by the Food & Drug Admin.. Yea! Because they first came to market for doing cosmetic work on people, their use control is regulated by them.
On to the second part. Some states have in fact passed laws under the highway control act stating that confusing/jamming laser speed detection IS illegal. You'd have to check with your state laws to see if this is you.
The Models as the jamming systems made by the larger companies such as K40 - Escort DO WORK. I own one and I can rell you without doubt. It's worked for me 15+ situations from city driving to high speed highway trips.
Once while coming back from Seattle along the pass I was hit with front laser doing 97 MPH, the priceless look on buddy's face when I clipped past him.. He tried a second time when I passed hitting me in the rear plate area with no better results.
Best investment for a heavy footed fellow as myself I could have made.

<sigh> My earlier post in this thread was (obviously) deleted...
ANSI set the standards and classification levels for lasers. The FDA only regulates lasers as used in health-related areas (surgery, food irradiation, etc.), OSHA takes care of work-related areas (physics research, materials cutting, etc.), plus a small selection of other groups who police one area or another, as they see fit.
For the time being, laser jammers are not illegal in and of themselves. Certain municipalities have made it illegal to interfere with the duties of a law enforcement officer in speed detection, but they're so ambiguous as to be unenforcable (should you care to take it to a high court... locally, they'll get away with it and slap a nice ticket in your hand).
I have often considered making a jammer now that LED technology has advanced far enough this last year or two, but it's one more project in a long (and growing) list of to-dos.
Oh, and the K40 only runs for 5 seconds to prevent burning the LEDs out... they overdrive the crap out of them, so if they don't turn off after 5 seconds they'll melt the die bond wires. Makes me wonder how long that system will last if you're in an area with lots of laser.
