Which states are Radar detectors illegal?
I'm in the process of driving from Orlando to Las Vegas mainly along the I-40 but I don't know which states I can use it in. Also do the cops really have radar detector detectors (VG2)?
Go to www.radartest.com They have a lot of good information, buyers guides with tests, as well as jammer truths and some info on VG2 etc... Not sure of the validity of the site but quite informative nonetheless. From what they say, any decent new radar detector is virtually invisible to "radar detector detectors."
As far as being illegal, from an officer here in Tx I was told that even though possessing a radar detector may not be illegal, he could still write a ticket for "Evading Detection..." blah blah blah, you know how it goes. It's not illegal to change lanes without signaling but you can get a ticket for "Unsafe Lane Change"....

I remember a story from the mid-80s when the Passport was THE detector to have (still made by Cincinnati Microwave). Somewhere in the mid-west, this couple got pulled for radar and the cop asked how much the Passport cost. When told that it was $250 (or whatever the price was back then), he told the driver that that's what the ticket would cost because he had the detector.
Not illegal but...
'Course, then there was the period of time where VA could confiscate the detector even if it was boxed and wrapped in your trunk ('70s).

In '90 during a road trip from Georgia to DC I had some radar detector trouble. I had just crossed in to Virginia when my radar detector (Whisler Spectrum II) jumped to the highest reading without any warning. I slowed down, but the next thing that I knew there was a police car with blue lights on approaching from the rear. Knowing that radar detectors are illegal in Virginia, I quickly stuffed it under the seat. The cop pulled me over. The first thing that she said to me was "where is the radar detector?" I said "what?" She said "you hit your brakes immediately when I turned on my radar gun, so I know you have a radar detector. Where is it?" I told her that it was under the seat and she instructed me to take it out. She then told me that radar detectors are illegal in Virginia. I responded that I'm from Georgia and they're not illegal for Georgia drivers. She then said that they are illegal in Virginia so she's going to write me a ticket for speeding and for having a radar detector. My friend, who had kept quiet this whole time, then says to me, but so she can hear "It's a poor state. They have to make their money some how." (he doesn't have anything against Virginia, he was just trying to aggravate her) She then told him in a stern voice that I was getting the ticket because they are illegal. To which he responded "well he doesn't have a plate on the front of his car. Are you going to give him a ticket for that too?" Her face immediately turned red and you could see the pure anger overtake her face. She then yelled "Do you want to go to jail, because I'll take you right now!" I told her no and she went and wrote me a couple of nice tickets.
