i think he just means tight vs sloppy bass... i'm guessing here. crisp is usually a tweeter related description...

I meant tight vs. sloppy, i guess crisp is more a tweeter related term. If the HX2 (or HE2 anybody know anything about this one) is relatively crisp, I'd be down. I do not want just really loud, sloppy bass.

You couldn't get an 8" trunk-mounted sub to sound sloppy if you tried

Subs get sloppy because of (1) underpowered motors, (2) low-passing at too high a frequency

(1) Underpowered motors happen when a company designs a line and uses the same exact motor structure for the 8/10/12...even the 15 . You'd be surprised how many popular companies use the exact same motor and just switch out cone size to get bigger subs...All because the same guy who puts racing stripes on his '89 Taurus is looking for the biggest sub possible--just to tell everyone he has a 15" in his trunk.

(2) Same problem with subs that are too big trying to play frequencies that are too high. It's hard for a 15" sub to play up to kick drums so you'll get sloppiness there unless you cross them right (which would require a good midbass up front). On the other hand, the 8" you're looking at wouldn't get sloppy up to 400 Hz and even if you were crazy enough to try to run it full range, anything above that would get swallowed up on the trip out of the trunk anyway (though this would be pretty awful for your sub)

Actually the HE2 is crisp/tight/punchy (whatever you want to call it). The HX2 (near the price of the ED8 sub) is super-natural sounding but only delivers good SPL at around 50hz, rolling off quickly. The HE2 is a better solution for a trunk mounted install of a sealed enclosure. The HX2 would be nice for a large ported box that shares the same air-space as the listener.

I am now out of MY2002 HE2's. For 2003 Rockford replaced the fibreloc cone (still used on RF's power and HX subs) with a poly cone and a bling-bling chrome dust cap. I have not tried to sell them as I think they were 2 steps back in quality and 12 steps back in appearance.

Get a Rockford Power 351M mono-amp to drive your Rockford HE2. Tweeters are very subjective. Some are very bright, some are not bright, and some are just right. It really depends on your listening preference.

If you can find some of the MY2002 HE2's you may want to pick some up.
