This 2V vs. 4V output concern may be a tempest in a teapot.

Over the years there have been many exaggerated claims about car stereo power output, distortion levels, etc. Basically a manufacturer could claim any numbers they wanted.

So, for the useless subjective question of the day....

How does it sound? Did you stick with the stock speakers running off the HU amp?

I had a 9855 in my last vehicle. No illumination when the unit was off, not even a clock was displayed. At least Alpine ditched that useless sensor bar input thing.
Wow that sucks, I installed a low end 05 model alpine in one of my parents car and I swear it had illumination when the unit was off.

It sounds ok, I didn't mess with it much as most of my interior is removed at the moment. I also plan on ordering some door speakers and a basslink today.

I think I'll contact alpine to see what they say about the illumination.

Well I called Alpine's tech support.

The technician didn't really seem very certain, but he claimed that no illumination with the HU off is normal behavior. He then cited the biolite display as the reason. Now, how the biolite display has any effect on the damn hardbuttons of the faceplate is beyond my comprehension, but.....

I'm actually kinda annoyed about the illumination.. I mean it'll be a very rare case that it'll be a problem, but come one, the 9857 isn't a $100 bottom of the line model.

The Alpine I put in one of my parents car cost a huge $140 and has illuniation. ugh.

IMO, the biolite display is a good reason to pick up this HU.

I had an HU with the "digital" letter type display in my 4RUnner and it sucked at showing text: CD Text, MP3 Folders / songames and expecially XM info. It also had a motorized display to adjust the angle of the face, and no matter what I tried there was alway some illumination of the unused portions of the display. It blew.

So here I am again with the same dilemma. I'd really like to get one of the DVA models to play MP3s from DVD... 4GB of MP3s per disc. But, only the premium model has biolite and steering wheel inputs... Too rich for my blood... Especially after the S2K purchase, and not sure about the theft situation with HUs in the car.

Curious about plugging up a remote monitor to the DVA video output. Sounds pretty sweet. Even better if you can get NAV from a remote video... but the latter is probably unlikely.

I picked up the 9857 since I'm not ready to relocate my Xtant 604 and need to save up for some nice BA components. Can't wait to try out the Ai-Net BT module, a product I've wondered why Alpine never adopted sooner. Maybe sometime down the road Alpine will introduce a DVA model with basic biolite, and steering wheel controls input which will satisfy my criterias... oh and not change the Ai-NET standard so all the "accessories" continue to work.

We need a letter to Alpine thread! ;-)
