Thank guys. Some interesting ideas here.
I think that as all radar detectors are highly sensitive radio receivers, as long as they are not completely hidden behind metal, a good quality unit like the V1 will alarm OK.
Problem is with laser. It has such a narrow beam, needs to hit the reciver. But I've also heard that if the V1 alarms with laser, then you may as well just pull over and have a friendly "chat" as they already got you.
I like the idea of velcro'ed to the dash and carefully hidden with the stealth hat! Very simple.
What we really need is a radar detector built into the rear view mirror. Mr Valentine are you listening?!
I've also heard of people mounting the unit on the dash by the left hand window post and say it works OK.
Any comments or experience with that?
Anybody used the 8500 Solo?
Heard that battery powered units just not as good as vehicle power.
Any comments?

Beautiful day today in the Pac: NW, so had a fast cruise through the country, top down. Only way to go.

My insurance adjuster told me (when a different car was broken into) that a radar detector will be insured (when stolen) if and only if it is hard-wired into the car.

I think the V1 or the Passport will do just fine for X and K band. I have an the older Passport 4600 and the performance has gone to poop. I am getting the K40 diffuser and will probably get a V1 off ebay. I really don't worry to much about KA because of the reflective cover over the plate. I would like to get the Bell diffuser, but my buddy is a K40 dealer. I really like the "trickness" of the K40
but even my buddy says go with the V1, because the K40 doesn't have the range or sensitivity of the V1 or Passport. The only prob. I will run into is my entire windshield is tinted 32%, with a 3 inch limo eyebrow, and that is what is killing the sensitivity of my Passport.

i have a valentine one, and i have actually been saved from lazer a few times. It seems to pick it up off the car or two ahead of you giving you a few seconds to slow down....i love mine, i can hard wire yours for you you live ten minutes from me...it took me about 15 minutes to have man hardwired and mounted right below my rear view mirror.

I have the 8500 with the lidar system..

.the lidar has saved my ass a half a dozen times...when it's gone off i've dropped below the speed limit and turned the lidar off...it must have worked as the cops let me go on on by.....it's made me a believer plugs right into your 8500 only thing you need to do is make sure they're level once in a while

it's a good investment

Well, the laser needs a flat vertical surface to "bounce" the signal off of. The best target for the cops is the front plate. I have also heard that the car is pretty low-pro to the laser guns. If you run without front plates you are going to be a little safer than if you have one on there, and you are always better off then the average pickup/suv/van.

I am running with no front plate, so may help with the laser, but also risk getting pulled over and hassled as in WA front plates are required.
Worth the risk. Besides, that flat plate in the front just does not go with the looks of the car!
Anyone tried the so called laser absorbing plate covers?
Do they work?
