Default Recomendations on component speakers and amps

Thanks to mis-information by a Best Buy salesman, I had purchased the Alpine SPR-17LS 6.5" component speakers and they did not fit as the speakers need more depth than allowed in the doors. I was able to return it. I spoke to the installer and he
recommended I buy 6.5" components with a max depth of 2.5". When asked about
amps, he recommended something 75-100W, 2 channel and with a high pass crossover. So, not being too knowledgeable about all this, I wanted to ask other owners about their setup and what they recommend. I am running an Alpine 9827 HU
already and am biased towards Alpine products, but need to make sure they even fit. All suggestions are welcome.

I checked Crutchfield.com and their search by car resulted in a handful of component
speakers. Is that the case? Is their site very accurate? Are there any other sites to
look up products by car?

Thanks!

I believe that the Infinity Reference series are drop in replacements, but I am not 100% sure on this.....just the consensus here. As far as amps go (and where to buy the speakers), I would look at www.cardomain.com and www.thezeb.com. You can get them a LOT cheaper than best buy. I have had bad luck with BB in the past, and they will NEVER get any of my car audio business again! Crutchfield has great customer support, but is also a bit pricey.

I got an Infinity 7520a amp (125WRMSx2 @4-ohms) for $80 shipped from cardomain.com. Got a set of Blaupunkt ODCa660 components (retail $195) for $45 from www.ikesound.com. (These are NOT drop ins....you will need a 3/4" spacer ring).

Never trust the at Best Buy. They are only good for flinging POO!!!!

I've been very happy with my Polk combination :

MM6500 components : http://www.cardomain.com/item/POLMMC6500
C300.2 amp : http://www.cardomain.com/item/POLC3002

The speakers dropped in without issue when using the spacer provided in the box.

I have the SPR-17LS 6.5 components.. and yes, ou do have to modify he baskets to fit. I used teh included spacer and cut the whole back end of the basket. the components are excellent! even without my sub, they sound very good. i do recommend dynomatting your doors though ;-) and yes, they have an RMS of 70W excellent speakers (by my experience)

I got some Infinity Kappa 60.5cs and they require cutting out the back of the stock speaker baskets. But I just cut them off with a rotary tool.

Almost any decent 6 1/2" component is going to require either modifying the stock "basket" or making your own spacer. I used 3/4" plywood to make spacers for my CDT EF-61's. Well worth the effort in my opinion.

What's the difference between components and coaxial speakers? I am looking at Alpine SPS-170A and Alpine SPS-171A. The first one is coaxial and the second one is a component. Thanks!

I see the components are two piece. Is that it?

Pretty much. Components usually sound better (IMO) because you can separate the soundstage. The tweeter also is not moving with the woofer in a component setup, so there is less interference with the frequency.

www.ikesound.com has some great prices. i agree with pretty much all the speakers mentioned as to being good speakers (polk momo, infinity kappa, and alpine type r are all pretty much in the same category in terms of quality so you cant go wrong with either). in my oppinion, infinity kappas are some of the best components for the price. obviously you can spend a lot more to get better speakers but you probably wont really hear that much of a difference.
