S-Pod Info (Consolidated Information)

so you upgraded the door speakers and added S=pods - did you upgrade the head unit - if not - are you satisfied?
Nick,
S-pods were the first upgrade I did to my system. I installed them with a pair of 5 1/4" Alpine Type R components, and used my stock fronts and HU. The quality of the sound at 75 MPH top down was similar to listening to the stereo with the top up at idle. In other words, they made a huge difference!!!!
I later added the same components in the door (only 6 1/2"), an Alpine 9815 HU, 10" Type R sub in the trunk, and a 5 channel Alpine amp to drive it all. Now the sound is WOW! With the top down at 80 MPH, the sound is cleaner than my home set-up, and I'm running an Invidia exhaust if that tells you anything!
Bottom line...... S-pods are probably the best first stereo mod, and a great place to start building your system!

I'm thinking to do the same except no amp and no sub with the alpine hu. Will the hu drive the spod, and new door speakers? and since I am under 6feet my seat is a little up so that behind me is free - in this case would you recommend lucid back panal instead of spod or is the Spod a better thing? I just don't want the extra kick of sub and amp and the costs, etc that go along with it
also, does the alphine you mentioned work with external radio controls?
i promise I won't bug you anymore
thanks

Nick,
The 9815 should have more than enough power to drive the four speakers, so an amp is not mandatory. Either rear speaker option will provide you with more sound volume, but I personally prefer the S-pods (that's probably a biased opinion). It just doesn't seem right to me to have a speaker fire into the back of the seat, and therefore I prefer the placement of the S-pod. Also, there is a reduced amount of wind buffetting when you use the S-pods in conjunction with a 7/8's or full wind sreen from Rick's!
To use the dash controls with the 9815, you will need to buy a DCI from Lucid (this is a harness that wires between the HU and your dash controls), or the option that I used, the DJ Qube controller. This controller gives your dash controls more functionality with your new HU, and utilizes the IR remote that comes with the 9815 (for more info on this controller, do a search for "DJ Qube"). This option is a little more costly, and will require you to remove your stock controls and ship them out to be upgraded, and then re-install them. However, the instructions are well written, and easy to follow. Probably took me 1 - 1.5 hours, and I was going slow and being very cautious! I personally think this controller is more user friendly than Lucid's.
Good luck with your decision!
Glenn

because I don't have a spouse and because I just received the ones you mailed just like you said I would.
However, if you want to design something else as swell, I will give it a try - in time for Christmas - like the final solution for in-cabin bass for those of us that do not absoluley have to rock the block.
