Sony Direct Wire Install/Programming {long}
Hmmm. From having just put mine in, I have a suspicion that the plug into the head unit has vibrated loose. It _is_, as you point out, quite tight back there. And there isn't really any way to strap it down. We know that if it isn't completely seated we get all sorts of wierd behavior (and, as an aside, the official Sony wired remote has the same problems, since I've tested that as well.) I'd try re-seating it and see if the problem is still there. If that fixes it, then you get the fun of trying to figure out a way to maintain the seating.
CRussel, thanks for the input here. I am glad to hear you received your unit and all appears to be working well.
Scooby2: Alternating red/green lights means one of two things. Either you have it wired incorrectly or you are making a mistake during programming. There really isn't anything else it can be. The alternating red/green lights don't actually have anything to do with the 1/8" connector. You can actually program the DCU with the 1/8" connector completely unplugged and it should program fine. If you get alternating red/green lights you need to check the dash controls input wire and make sure that it is connected to the proper place on the Honda harness. If it is not, you will not be able to program it. You also need to make sure the mute input wire is wired to the proper location. If you are using mute mode 0 you must make sure that the mute output (light blue) is connected to the Sony light blue wire, and NOTHING else. Another possible problem is that you are using an old instruction sheet. I e-mailed instruction sheets out a while back to everyone in the group buy. You should be using this sheet. If you are not, I'll be happy to e-mail it to you again. I'm afraid these are the only possibilities. You asked about memory: The DCU uses re-programmable EEPROM storage to store it's programming. This memory can be written thousands of times. Each time you enter the programming cycle, the memory contents are overwritten as you program the device. If you make a mistake and start over, it is not a problem. The only way you could see odd behavior is if you started to program the device, get part way through, turn the key off, and then try to use the DCU.
Kacee: I don't completely understand what kind of problem you are describing. You said that the DCU has worked fine for several days. You also said that you have had to program it several times to get it to accept the program. I'm afraid that there are only three explanations for it accepting the program sometimes, but not others. First, the dash controls input wire or the Mute input wire could have a loose connection. Second, there is a variation in the way you are following the instructions, or third the dash controls in your S2000 are not working all the time (doubtful).
Also, are you saying that after the car sat for the weekend, it performed the wrong function for the Mode button, or that the DCU is performing the FM1/FM2/FM3/AM1... cycle function (mode) all by itself? I need a better description of the problem. I would also like to know the temperature difference from the day that you programmed it? Did the temperature get significantly colder or warmer since you programmed it? There is a temperature related problem that I have had a couple of people report, and I have a fix for it. I'd be happy to perform this on your unit if you send it back to me. Did the problem start AFTER you put the adapter fix in, or has it worked fine with the adapter fix for some time and then quit working?
Kaptain Insano: Since you sent me all of your equipment, your Sony, DCU, and wiring harness, I am 100% sure that there are no problems with any of the connections or the hardware. I tested all of it in my car several times. I even sent you the unit that I built for my own use that I have been using in my own car for some time. If you are having difficulties programming it, it HAS to be a problem with the programming sequence. I know it isn't very easy to follow, but it is the best I am able to write. I e-mailed you the latest version of instructions and I hope that helps.

On programming it without the 1/8th connector plugged in -- absolutely true, since while I was programming mine, it was out(and I didn't know it). Then I couldn't figure out why it wasn't working. DUH! Plugged it in, and all was as expected.
S2Kman;
"You said that the DCU has worked fine for several days. You also said that you have had to program it several times to get it to accept the program."
Before I installed the adapter fix, it would program nearly every time on the first attempt....just wouldn't work consistently once I tried to use it.

I'll recheck the connection
"Also, are you saying that after the car sat for the weekend, it performed the wrong function for the Mode button, or that the DCU is performing the FM1/FM2/FM3/AM1... cycle function (mode) all by itself?"
Not wrong function...just the cycle function (mode) all by itself. Also, does it randomly FM1 to FM2, goes 15 seconds, then FM3, AM1, AM2, goes a minute, FM1,goes 10 seconds etc.
"I would also like to know the temperature difference from the day that you programmed it?"
Programmed at 30F....probably about the same temp this morning. No significant warmups since programming.
"Did the problem start AFTER you put the adapter fix in, or has it worked fine with the adapter fix for some time and then quit working? "
I had several failed attempts at programming after the adapter install. Finally got the unit to take the program. I programmed, drove that night, drove the next day-all OK, car sets the weekend and I have problems.
If you recall, I had this same problem before the adapter fix with the DCU cycling by itself...see previous posts. I can't figure out why it just started.
Update.....
Got home and pulled my stereo...checked all the connections...all look fine. I purchased the harness and DCU...best I can tell, all of the ones you did are all fine. I figured since I pulled the entire harness, I might as well grind the plug...took 2 minutes with a dremmel...wire it back up, tried to program...no luck...alternating flashing lights. I tried 12 times to program and it would not take a single one.
So...on to plan B...can you please PM me with your address. I will FEDEX the entire harness and DCU for you to check out. I can also supply the code sequence...maybe if you can get it to work...then you can return it and I'll just have to plug n' play. Let me know what works best...I can send overnight express with a return envelope.
Thanks,
KaCee

Here's an idea since you said that the DCU doesn't need to be plugged in for it to be programmed. I'll send the harness and DCU back to you, have you program the functions that I specify and then you can send it back to me. Once it works, I don't really care about messing or changing any of the button functions.
Scooby: Let's decide to use either e-mail or the forum for interaction, I can't do both at the same time, sorry. To answer your question, I can't pre-program the DCU for you. Unfortunately the components that the S2000 dash controls are built vary in value quite a bit, and if I program it on my vehicle it probably won't work on yours. You have to accomplish the programming on your car. If you are in San Diego, I'd be happy to come do it for you.
Kacee: If you can't get it to work after checking the connections, the best thing I can offer is for you to send both the DCU and the harness to me and I'll test it.

S2Kman,
Sent you an email to: dashcontrols@san.rr.com
I need an address to send the unit back to you. I will FEDEX overnight express with a return. Need to know where it is best to send.

good suggestion Scooby2. I would also be interested in knowing out of those working 100%, which headunit is installed and model year of the S.
Mine is on its way back to S2Kman.
I'll post an update on the problem ASAP.
