speakers
They are, technically, 6.5" speakers.....although they are on the small side. I would remove one, and bring it to a stereo shop and ask "what is this size?" I have heard that if you just want a drop-in replacement set, without any significant modifications, the Infinity Reference series serve well. They are kinda light on the mid-bass, but great on the highs. If you get these, you might want to think about a sub. I, personally, like components rather than coaxials. I like separation of the mids and highs. The big thing is to LISTEN before you buy. Go to Best Buy, or any stereo shop for that matter, and ask to listen to some different pairs. Pick the one you want, then get them online (cheaper).
I have a pair of Blaupunkt ODCa660 oversized 6.5's. They required a 3/4" MDF spacer ring be cut for each one, but they sound GREAT. The 1" silk dome tweeters are amazing. They retail for $195, but I got them for $60 online.
if you are just looking to augment the stock HU, speakers are a good option, but good speakers will show the flaws in the HU a lot more than the stock speakers. I would recommend also replacing the HU as well. The stock HU (AP1) is only like 7WRMS of power. Mid range deck ($200-300) will be around 17-25WRMS. I have teh Alpine 9851, and I can hear it loud a clear at 90+ with the top down.
