Default Stereo Upgrades

I searched and couldn't find much relevent info.

I have an '03 with the stock stereo and recently installed serius through the FM band but playback is low then the allready terrible stocker.

Can anyone give me an idea on some basic mods that can be done to improve the sound (volume)?

I'm not looking to convert my truck to an amp rack, just basics?

Speaker upgrades?

New speakers in headrest?

speakers behind seats?

Thanks,

Andy

Your best bet, is a head unit upgrade. I'd get one that does Sirius directly rather than going through an FM modulator, since that is a big contribution to sound loss and degradation. Plus, an aftermarket head unit will have a much better internal amplifier than the stock one. You can even keep the dash controls...and actually improve on their functionality with a Modifry DCI.

basic head unit, ~200$, reputable brand like alpine or pioneer or jvc with sirius support
100$ for a pair of coaxial speakers , also reputable brand , with high sensitivity rating

To a point.

I would upgrade the HU with a Sirius capable system. (You may be able to use the unit you have, but it would plug directly into the HU and be controlled from the HU.) You should also get MP3 playback capability, and possibly an easy iPod hookup out of the deal. Close the radio door and it looks stock again.

I would also upgrade the front speakers. However, since you already have an '03 with tweeters, I would go for component speakers over coaxial.

IF that doesn't cut it, a small amp could be easily added later to boost the output.

You do NOT need any rear speakers. Quality front speakers with sufficent, CLEAN, power to them would solve your problem.

adding rear speakers is the easiest, cheapest way of increasing the volume
with the stock headunit, though it will do little or nothing for the sound
quality, and some (many?) people prefer to have the sound coming from
the front rather than all around.
adding an amp does not have to involve "converting your trunk to an amp
rack" - if you choose a reasonably small amplifier it can be mounted above
the gas tank, completely hidden and occupying no useful space.

upgrade headunit for sure, and a set of components for the front. i do like having the rear speakers, but they were there when i purchased the car. if they werent there, i wouldve done them, but up to you. not to jack your thread, but im posting up some Infinity coponents later today (hopefully) and they sounded very good. If interested, let me know, or watch the for sale section later for them. Other brands i recomend highly are JL and Alpine.
