I'm in the process of upgrading my stereo system, and was going to throw in my friend's old alpine as the h/u until I decide what to get (within the next 12 months). He now wants to hold onto it, so I'm thinking of just doing a line level converter and using the stock deck for the time being.

How good is the stock 02 deck in terms of fidelity?

IMO: not all that good. It's lacking a great degree of power and those pre amp outs won'tput put out even 2 volts. How much $$$ are those line level converters and whats the voltage? If they are cheap buy one, and wait until you can afford a HU with a a decent pre-amp.

But if you don't have much dough and the converter is expensive, hold off until you can get a decent HU. Look at the spec sheets and not the bells and whistles, there many HU's that sell you gizmos and widgets that you don't really need.
