Default Is there a way to raise the odometer?

My odometer wasn't working propertly and I got one with less miles.
However, I want to keep my original miles so I don't commit crime if I ever sell the car.

Is there a way to raise the number?

i dont think so. u just have to notify DMV of a change, and they will record it.

do NOT notify DMV

You will get a Not Actual Mileage title and your car will have significantly diminished resale value.

Now, mind you, this is not legal advice. You may, in your state, in fact be required to report you have inaccurate mileage. HOWEVER, if you are an ethical person, and you are doing your best to show accurate mileage on your odometer, to the point of wanting to roll UP a new used odometer, then you should not be punished for your honesty. After all, you can say nothing and maybe get away with passing the car off as having significantly fewer miles, which is wrong, and you don't want to do that.

I had a similar issue with my previous car, which had a bad combo speedometer/odometer unit. After many attempts to fix the speedometer, I bought a new one, which had an odometer reading of 000000.

I took it to the shop and instructed them to roll up the mileage to start with my actual mileage on the old odometer, which was in the 70 thousands. They refused, said it was illegal, blah blah blah. Stupidly, I agreed to the installation with zero miles. Somehow the DMV got wind of it, too, and I got a "not actual mileage" title.

A few years later, I found from a more reliable mechanic that it was, indeed, possible to roll up the mileage prior to installing the unit for the first time. Installing it, however, would break some tabs that made it difficult/not ordinarily possible to alter the mileage. It was too late for me.

I don't know about the S2K odometer. It is possible, however, that a NEW odometer can be rolled up to reflect accurate mileage, but that once installed, it is officially tamper proof, so a new used odometer can't be easily rolled.

years ago, i had a odometer replaced on the Saturn i owned at the time. the dealer did the replacement (it was under warranty), and they kept the car over night. they pulled the odo in the morning and contacted the OEM w/ my mileage. the next day, a new odometer arrived mid morning w/ my exact old mileage on the new odometer.

seeing how you bought (what sounds like) a used odometer, i'm not sure how you'd get this done. regardless, if you don't report it, the next time you take it to get inspected or serviced -- your variation is going to appear on a carfax. so, you're still going to have problems via that route.

did you do the install yourself? or was there a certified ASA mechanic involved? i know a friend of mine who swapped a broken odometer for one out of a wrecked vehicle. the mechanic had a specific form he completed showing that the old odometer was removed w/ xxx,xxx miles and a new one was put in showing yyy,yyy miles. he didn't have to report anything to the DMV, and just sold the car w/ this written statement. (i believe it was notorized.) the DMV reviewed the sale/title transfer and accepted this w/o question, iirc.
