I was finally able to fix it. Somewhat out of frustration, I cut the black and yellow wire that oth mentioned and rewired them together, and it did the trick. I realized that while the wire did not completely snap, the copper inside partially did. That's why it would occassionally work. Cutting this part out fixed the problem.
