Trying to build a JL system
150 rms front speakers? I like that. However here is the thing I went to 3 different audio stores and all of them said that I was doing a perfect selection with the 500/1 and the 12W6v2
One more thing, I get the point that when you have a 4 ohm sub and 4 ohm amp its pretty much same power as having a 1 ohm amp and 1 ohm sub.
But if they end up with the same power what is the difference?
A 4 ohm sub with a 4 ohm 500 watt amp will sound louder than a 1 ohm sub with a 500 watt 1 ohm amp?
Is it like you have a 2 ohm sub and you power it with a 500 watt 2 ohm sub you have 500 watts and you power it with 500 watt 1 ohm sub and you end up with only 250 watts of power from your sub?
I need some vitamins or somthin this thing is getting confusing, oh and also what does the voice coils do? is it good to have more?

First of all.....let me ...let YOU in on a little secret. I have many friends around the NYC area that own audio shops, respectable ones. They told me that JL pays the highest commision, and lowest dealer cost, allowing them to make more money per product (assuming they are authorized dealers) than any other manufacturers. Remember, its still a business and they will push whatever makes them the most money.
As far as subs go, a sub that is 4ohm that eats 1000wrms, if it exists, will cost a lot of money. Most big power subs are 1-2 ohms max.
Usually, an amp thats rated 500wrms@ 4ohms will be about 1000+wrms @ 1 ohm.
So the power output is much greater at lower impedence. Phil can you post up that link that explains how all this works(ohms, watts, etc)
(Remember Andy, only a select few amps are 1ohm stable.)
As far as voice coils, you can have a single voice coil, or what is knows as DVC, dual voice coil. People say there is a benefit, like more exact bass, but I have a very hard time telling the difference. Single coils usually put out more power.

oh, and to add to Dave's comment:
dual voice coils are mostly there for wiring flexibility to the end user, imo. but they have other benefits.. as i understand it, it allows for a larger quantity of coil wiring (thus more power handling) without being limited by a single coil run (and burning the coil due to excess power through tiny wire.)... so the power can be more effectively handled and the mandatory heat generated can be better dissipated since the coils are separate.
on this page http://www.bcae1.com/installationprimer.htm
at point 6 under Misinformation and Ignorance - there's a little thing on DVC subs.
actually -- i should have included that page in my previous post.
http://www.bcae1.com/installationprimer.htm is a 'installation primer' and will cover a lot of topics all at once... it's a sort of basics of stereo and car stereo.

So Phil.....let me get this straight......speakers run off water???
JK.....great analogy, I actually learned a thing or three.
Ive never heard the Eclipse components myself, but hear good things. BOstons are very pleaseant in my opinion, just a little harder to find online. Id give a listen to the Focals, and Infinities.
What do you think about the Polk car stuff....their home theater is not too bad, but Ive never heard any car audio from them in person....
THe momo is a special edition or something right?

the MOMO was once a special edition series - but is now generally just their high end stuff.
Polk home and car audio is good stuff imo. i don't own any because they all generally have an 'ambient' sound that i don't personally like. their stuff is usually pretty accurate, usually warm in the midrange, a little bit fuzzy at the highs (but still reasonably accurate), and with smooth, but not agressive bass. the fuzzy in the highs usually gives me the feeling that they are 'spacey' sounding... almost like an open air dipolar effect (if you're following me).
think Definitive's tower speakers...

oh, and the Bostons -- i saw someone here describe them as 'very British sounding', and that's an excellent description... if you've ever heard any british audio gear, you'll know what i mean.
expect them to be very strong in midrange w/ clear highs and decent to solid bass. some people find them to be overwhelming in the midrange area, but in essence they are just very flat.
