Trying to build a JL system
Hey phill, i am still in the dark about if I would have 2 subs runnig from the 500/1 would they get 250 each? or would they get 500 each at different ohms? I mean a 4 ohm amp and 2 2ohm subs get powered 500 watts each and a 4 ohm amp and 2 4 ohm subs get 250 watts each?
Kinda confusing, I wanted to get back to that whole water and piping part but it just made my bladder feel funny and I had to go pee.

I like the focal 165w 2 way but its kinda pricy, retails for $1100, can get a pair for around $550. Still though 2 front speakers, does it worth it? I need to listen to that big boy I guess.
Hmm kappa perfect 6.1 is not bad for the price actually you were right dave.
Lists for 589 found a pair for $200, thats a frikkin bargain for a 100 watt rms 400 watt peak component systme I think.
How about high end Rockford Fosgate stuff, is this still low qualiy because I remember once i was talking about these and someone, might be dave, asked if I am on a budget since I am trying to go with low quality stuff. That kinda hurt you know guys I felt like a cheap bastard
oh oh I like this kinda, whenever I see high wattage I get a boner
JBL GTi Series C608GTi, 150 rms not bad, I dont know the clarity though.

the Focal Utopia 165W is a really nice speaker. i've heard a couple sets, but in all honesty -- for the S2000, i think it's a wasted speaker. the car just has too much background noise to justify the nuances the Utopia provides.
look into the Focal PolyKevlars (165K2)... they are a bit cheaper, and are very comparable in sound quality.
most of the stuff that i posted for you can reasonably be expected to handle 150 Wrms. in a couple of cases, it might be pushing the limits, but w/ these high quality manufacturers you can anticipate them handling a bit more...
and yes -- with the 500/1 if you have 1 4 ohm sub, it would see 500Wrms. if you had 2 2 ohm subs, you will be splitting the power between them, so each sub will get about 250 Wrms. if you're strongly considering that route, you might want to consider picking up 2 8w3v2's and putting them in WLaurent's enclosures... just an option to consider.
also - you keep mentioning the amp as being 4 ohms or 2 ohms. amps provide power and speakers provide resistance. so, saying an amp is 2 ohms or 4 ohms is actually incorrect... amps provide power to channels, where the power is based upon the resistance seen. i'm assuming that is what you mean...
for example:
sub A = 1 10" 4 ohm SVC (single voice coil) this sub has a resistance of 4 ohms.
sub B = 1 10" 2 ohm DVC. this sub can be wired with the dual voice coils in parallel and thus have a total resistance of 1 ohm. i can also be wired with the coils in series, and have a total resistance of 4 ohms.
amp A = brand X (typical amp), 150 Wrms x 1 channel @ 4 ohms, or 300 Wrms x 1 channel @ 2 ohms.
amp B = JL 500/1 (which is an unusual amp in that it outputs the same power regardless of resistance), 500 Wrms x 1 channel @ 1.5 ohms, 500 Wrms x 1 channel @ 2 ohms, 500 Wrms x 1 channel @ 4 ohms...
does that maybe help clear anything up?
Dave,
i haven't heard either of those babies... wow, they have that excellent minimalist design/look that i adore...
i seem to recall reading a review on that amp a little while ago... but that's about all i remember.

I agree, 165W, is an amazing speaker, but the sound it makes clear is just ruined by the s2000. I would def check out the infinitys, I have a 300/2 going to mine and love every minute of it. However, they are not for everyone....I love ear piercing highs, I even have my tweeters set at +5db
If you like them, they are a very high quality speakers, and honestly, for 200 bucks, YOU CANT GO WRONG. I am not a big fan of JBL car audio....home audio is another world.....and I wouldnt buy anything from fosgate except a few of their subs these days.
As far as subs go.......I would choose Phils sub option B....1 DVC sub at 2+2 ohm coils for 500/1 This is exactly what I have, and love the setup.

Phil.....we need to find some components that can eat about 120-150wrms without burning up....My infinitys can take about that, and focals as well.

I run 125 watts RMS to my MB Quart's but I know how you both feel about those

I'm... uh.... well.........Skip.
