Trying to Put a Budget System Together HELPPPP
Ive done extensive searching, and I am still unsure what to do. I have decided on an Alpine 9807 headunit, but Im not sure what speakers to get. I figure its best to go with Alpines, but will 2 new high end door speakers be adequate?? I dont want anything explosive (no sub), but I want a big improvement over stock (MY01). Im looking to spend only about 500 total. Any suggestions ???
The best thing you can do is go listen to the speakers in your price range. If you are not going to use an amp make sure the speakers you are listening to are not amped...it makes a big difference.
ok so with that said you'll be looking into just replacing the HU and the front setup for now. So you should looking at basicly a drop in setup. You could spend a little extra $$ and get a good set of seperates
you'll need to have the tweeters custom fit into the doors but its very easy any good shop wit a Dremel can cut them in and install your woofers in about an hour maybe 1 1/2 hours tops.
You can get some really nice speakers for about $200 bucks with enough to get it installed leftover. Alpine's, MB Quarts, Diamond Audio's, etc etc, you need to listen to a few different sets and decide what fits your ear the best.
But you'll easily be able to accomplish your goal with $500 bucks.

I think the Diamond M6's are one of the best comps for the $. Great quality and config options.
But in your case and this is what I'm doing, just got my S, I would rec. going with the Alpine HU that has the VDrive power, I don't plan for ext. amp later, and get the Alpine comps or whatever you think sounds good as Kronos mention.
I'm getting the 9833 but for speakers, I've done this in past, went to stereo shop and listen, found same set on Ebay for 1/2 price and install myself. Crutchfield has been helpful for info but they're $ but sometimes they have a better price...I got my 7995 for 309 ship with install kit and harness...just wish it had a built in amp

the best way to shop for speakers is to hit the streets and listen to whatever you can... based on your budget you can probably get a decent set of components, which will help your sound a great deal.
(btw, did you want to keep your dash controls? if so, you'll need a DCI which will cost you roughly $100)
if you're trying to narrow down the components competition in advance, seeing as you're planning on using head unit power, you may want to focus on component sets with higher sensitivity levels... i generally find that a sensitivity of 90 dB/w/m or higher will sound pretty good using head unit power... it's not a firm rule, just a rule of thumb.
either way though, you can definitely get something which will sound good and be a big improvement over stock on your budget.

Yea... I read about the dash controls thing. Im planning on getting that a little down the road. Another thing... Ive always been told that its good to match brands, so if i have an alpine HU, i should go with alpine speakers. Either way Ill listen to them all.
