If you don't like the foam idea, you can get crafty and install a small crank case breather at the end of the hose. Might need to use some thin tubing inserted at the end of the hose so you have a male connection for the small air filter. Overkill in my opinion but it would make sure there are no contaminates going into the fuel system.
