Default AEM EMS tuning for Turbo

Im obviously new around here. lol. But I may be getting a 2002 S2K soon. Ill end up with new exhaust and was looking at Turbo kits. I see where the AEM is the better EMS to get but I also see where it requires extensive "TUNING". Exactly what is this. I realize its fuel mapping and timing. But how hard is ? Do alot of these EMS come with some kinda manual and program to download and help guide you? I see where ppl are putting on these kits and waiting to go to a tuning. Im jus wondering if there are guidelines of numbers or what have you to jus punch in and your set?

Also what gauges would anyone recommend for a pillar pod. Im thing wideband O2 and Boost. what say thee?

Thanks

Yes, fuel, air, timing, nos, fans, VTEC engagement, ect. It controls everthing.

But how hard is ? Very long process. Not for amatures. You need to find someone that has done several S2000s. Guys that have done AEMs in other cars are not always the best. My car was messed up by a guy that is awesome with other cars.
If you can get someone that was trained at AEM, do it.

Do alot of these EMS come with some kinda manual and program to download and help guide you? Yes but don't play with it on your own.

There are a lot of guys with every kind of turbo out there. I have a good map for the Speedcraft turbo and I know a guy that has a map for the Lovefab kit. These would only be a start. You would need to have someone tune it to your car.

Also what gauges would anyone recommend for a pillar pod. Im thing wideband O2 and Boost. what say thee? I have a boost and wideband in mine but soon i will have a wideband and EGT.

AEM has manuals available for download on their website. They also offer a hands-on class, where you can even bring your car to tune. If you pass the class, you are a certified EMS Tuner.

Let me caution you against an ill-informed, half-assed DIY approach to tuning this jewel. DON'T let your first try at tuning melt a very fine engine. This has happened to others. Big $$$$ instead of saving $

To tune safely you need some experience, and a firm grasp of the basics of combustion like:

air and fuel flow requirements for target HP
pulse width and duty cycle limits of fuel injectors
air/fuel ratio and its effects on exhaust temp and detonation
ignition timing and its effects on exhaust temp and detonation
fuel octane rating and its effects on detonation
cylinder pressure and its effects on detonation and torque production

Armed with this knowledge, a laptop PC, the flexible EMS, wideband O2 sensor/controller, and an inexpensive performance computer, you can tune the car while a trusted buddy drives it.

Thanks for the replies. I did find a shop that has extensive use AEM EMS. He even built a turbo S2K b4 there were kits. They turbo mustangs and stuff, not too extensive with hondas, but the guy said the same stuff you guys did, you dont wanna mess around with something you dont know about. So, id leave it to the experts.

Thanks

Be very careful. Many shops are AEM certified. That means they have been trained to run the software and hardware- NOT TO TUNE! Many AEM certified shops have some of the worst tuners in the business... I know of many local tuning shops, but very few that I trust. That's why I tune all of my own cars.

It sounds like the shop you have found does good work. The best thing you can do is to educate yourself as much as possible even if somebody else will be tuning your car.

jcarlton,

Nice VR spyder in your sig! Beautiful kit, I wanted to get one for my last old Z car, but I sold it. Have you seen the Factory Five Racing spyder? Its a modified version of their shelby cobra frame with the usual mustang donor parts, and a sleek GT roadster body . Badass machine, but I forget what they call it.
