FI and an aftermarket thermostat
I have never added one, about to do a coolant change and thought for $75 maybe the mugen is a good idea. Do most people use them? What are the downsides in cool weather?

I'm a hater for all things coolant upgrade. My car is driven in south Florida. Has huge fmic. I have fans on all the time. Stock thermo stock radiator. With ac on I usually don't see over 200 in stop in go traffic. Ac off I see 180-185.
This is in hot summer weather. So I don't feel that stuff is needed. But that's just me. I don't road race or autox the car. Just hard street driving.

I'm with Camuman. I have mugen thermostat and fan switch which keeps me around 180-185 with the stock radiator and fans. I reach 200+ only in SEVERE stop and go traffic. Never once have I had an overheating issue, and I live in Tampa which is more humid and hot than probably 75% of this subforum.
Stick with the stock stuff until you have a problem that needs to be addressed.

To directly address your question - the issue with a lower thermostat in colder weather is it may open too early which won't allow the coolant to get up to a normal operating temp of 190*. It's a mod that won't necessarily hurt, but also won't really help either.

I run the mishimoto thermostat only bc I had cooling issues on my old set up, various cooling upgrades later(dual fans, koyo rad, mishimoto thermo and hoses) I realized I had a blown head gasket, my car stays around 175 now, I prob should raise when my fans come on to put me in the 185 range

I really don't think cooling is a problem, but was just thinking about my map which has settings based on water temp and goes richer as water temps rise. That is all fine and good, but just wondering if FI guys who do this might find it runs better, less laggy in hot weather if the water temps are kept on the cooler side of things.
Since I am changing the coolant and then going in for a tune at the end of the month, thought it might be worth doing. I see mugen thermostats are now $100, which is laughable so I think I will pass.
Just wanted to see if people maybe had FI cars run a little better with them than without, but if it is not tracked it is probably overkill. I also drive the car in late fall that can be in the 40's in the morning or late evening so probably not a good idea. But as Camuman knows, my intake is right on top of the header before the air is heated by the SC even further. It is intercooled, but my intake temps are high after lots of boosting, I just kind of toyed with the idea of bringing the coolant temp down a bit because it was the easiest thing to do before I have to cut a hole in the hood for a NACA duct.

I have a mugen fan switch and mugen thermostat and koyo radiator. When the water temperature reaches 180 then the thermostat opens and the fans kicks in so it drops the water temperature to 165. This thing circles continiusly except if i do couple of pulls where the temperature goes above 180

I run j's fan switch mishimoto rad and j's thermostat. I'm in philadelphia so in the winter i'm driving my truck over the S most days anyway. In the summer the car runs 175-185 but in the winter it takes awhile to get up to those temps.
