Default How to hook up a timing light

I am trying to set the timing on my car. I try to get it connected to the cord going to the first coil (closest to bumper), but the wires are too close to the next coil, and it has an incomplete connection. I get the occasional flash every 5 or six seconds. Any ideas?

There is a several inch loop in the bundle of wires at the back of the engine where you can pick up signal for the timing light.

Be careful if you hit the poer or ground you will read Dweel not timing.

I would suggest that you make a smal plug wire to go from your coil to the plug and put the clamp around that.

How are you going to adjust timing? Can you even measure the timing on this car?

Yes, you can read the timing. The crank pulley has markings.

Evans Tuning also mentions using a jumper wire between the coil and plug.

This is an important step to setting up an AEM EMS. You need to sync the timing so that the spark and fuel are intiated at the correct time.

I take the coil pack off the cylinder 1 spark plug and run a high tension lead between them. I clip the sensor around this.
