Don't most coil packs run similar to the OEM cop's? The Honda coilpacks just have three wires: 12v, Ground, and trigger. If the trigger voltages are the same, which they should be, it 's probably just a matter of rigging up a connector. If the signal needs to be inverted, a $1 darlington pair can flip it. I'm sure you could find some coil wires for a reasonable price as well.

If they have ignitors than yes you can do that, but you will need to calculate the required dwell time and make compenstions for changes with you EMS. On the surface it seems easy but as they say the devil is in the details.

ah yes, the bane of getting the appropriate dwell dialed in.. especially in a forced induction setup.

Yeah, Mazda guys seem to be a head of the curve when it comes to ignition. When I was doing my research i found many tags for RX? sites.

Yeah.. in the case of the RX8 the stock ignition would only be good till about 320whp before major misfires became an issue. A popular plug and play solution would typically use LS2/Gm Yukon coils in a conversion PnP kit, bear in mind these coils were overkill in our application for a 1.3L motor. I suspect in the case of the S where it's still a relatively small engine (2.2l) they will also serve as a good upgrade.

A few minutes with an o-scope and a frequency generator will tell you the dwell offset.

Yes that can surley be done but it is a bit harder, for instance you need to develop a curve based on voltage. This is a dynamic system.

I'm not understanding. What's the voltage problem? Are you talking about the cars voltage supply, or the rpm dependant dwell? logging in-car would give you a baseline. From there you would use the new coils to calculate a curve. I honestly believe you could do external coils cheaply with a little bit of research. I may try a few coils myself once I'm done moving and settled.

I think that the coil thing might be a bit of a myth there are quite a few of us running over 500hp on stock coils with no issue, myself included I know some members are well over 6 maybe even 7. I run 28psi with 10 heat range plugs gapped to .028 and a VERY hard to ignite fuel mixture (even compared to E85) and have no misfires at all.

That may be the case. I'm just curious about it as a technical challenge. It could be a cheap way to replace them too if one wanted.
