As I'm on the home stretch of getting my car back on the road I realize that I'm going to have to pass emissions, and with that I realize that I will be running 9:1 compression instead of the 11:1. Should I be concerned? Will the motor die prematurely? Should I not engage in VTEC? It would be a waste of my time to only find out that I might blow my engine up for emissions.

if your car is tuned properly and your ecu is OBD2 compliant then you shouldnt have a problem at all.

 

What ecu are you using?

 

From the research I've been doing, the only way to pass emissions is to use a stock ecu. My intentions were to drive around town until i passed emissions and then get the turbo put on and tune it. How safe would it be to run a stock ecu with the lowered compression?

Totally safe. In my experience through data logging my low comp motor with stock ecu and in just general principal for any motor, the ecu will just run its optimum timing since your detonation threshold has been raised, the stock ecu will have more knock headroom and will likely run always at its fullest advance, but it cant go beyond its timing parameters set forth from the factory. You should have no concerns.

If you were running higher then stock compression on stock ecu I would have some reservations.

So run it, take smog, and then do what you will with the turbo.

 

I was running a stock ecu on a lower compression motor. Ran fine and passed emissions fine.

 

don't drive like a jackass and you will be fine.
