Paul-

Wow. Sucks bud!

That noise is definitely not good. Does it go away when you rev it at all? If so, that is the TCT. If it gets louder / maintains level when revved, its a drivetrain component (i.e. - piston or rod bearing).

In terms of which is worse, both can be equally bad (screwing the sleeves on the block, damaging the crank, etc.). It depends on how badly it failed, and whether it was driven after the failure was noticed.

In terms of cost, I had the EXACT same block / head combo as you, and when my bearings failed, S&R Performance charged me $3200 to rebuild it (about $1200 in new parts required). In my case, my head gasket blew, compromised oil, and bearings spun as a result. If it is the rod bearings, they will definitely need to be replaced. Then it depends on the level of damage as to whether the crank / rods need replacement. If the bearing failed catestrophicly, chances are the cylinder walls are scored due to the rod locking up, and the block must be honed (you will not know any of this until the motor is broken down). If the crank is still good, you can get away with just micropolishing it.

Also, while you are in there, you might as well replace the oil pump. When mine failed, I did not replace it, as it was still working fine (inspected, turned, cleaned, and reinstalled), but was apparently damaged by the metal shavings, and ended up failing on the person I sold the car to... For $250 for a new oil pump, its more than worth the potential risk of having another engine failure due to a failed oil pump (low oil pressure is what causes spun bearings, and the cause of the low oil pressure can damage the oil pump).

Best of luck with it!

John

Sorry I'm against paying money to a site that has search down 75% of the time.

I can always sell my parts through you on the boards.

Quit freaking yourself out Paul!! This thread was a bad idea IMO and is doing absolutely nothing but make you feel like shit and have you constantly guessing when you dont even know what the problem is.. I would lock it till you go through the proposed inspection steps and then open a new one when you find the problem and need a remedy. If I can be of any help let me know bud.
