The SECRET COMPARTMENT really DOES exist!
OK a lil off topic here, but chiming in regarding some other posts.
The gas cap release in my view is intentionally in that spot. This car is a convertible and is likely to be left locked with the top still down. Therefore you can't access the fuel without unlocking and opening the car door.
Why the gas cap release can't be in the same spot as the trunk release is a whole new question. Afterall you wouldn't fill your car up with the engine running so there is no need for the keys to be in the ignition. The keys could therefore unlock the centre console if required.
The secret compartment is just another way to give us some lockable storage in the car. Apart from this the only lockable place is the centre console (again from design view of car being left unattended with top down).
I guess the other option would be to put the lock on the top section so that it opens both centre console and secret compartment at the same time. The drawback here is dirt and rain getting in a lock that faces upwards. Also that you don't always need to open both at the same time.

Oh I'm so mad and so happy at the same time! Despite the need for storage, I never thought to look further than the glove box, trunk, behind the seats, and inside under the back window (another gem when storage is tight). It's been 2 years, 2 months since I bought mine, and I just found it today. I'm glad people hinted where it would be.

truthfully, i wasnt shown it, i read the instruction manual. but i dun remember if it really pointed it out in there for me. i kinda skimmed sum points.
but that odd lil strip of glass between the seats like always attracted my curiosity.
i remember within like the first week showing the car off to my boss who owned a miata. i opened the normal first compartment to put my gloves in there cus i usually just leave em on the passanger seat where he was sitting. and after i put my gloves in the first compartment, i tried closing it gently and after 3 embarrassing tries,he takes it and gives it a sharp throw to which it obeys and closes
so after i had finished showing it off, i thot about that compartment and the fact u have to kinda throw it back to get it to close, and while checking out that hinge that holds the latche i felt sumn odd and "Viola!!" a secret switch that opened a compartment under that fishy lil piece of glass!!
and the second compartment is soo much deeper n roomier!!

oh and just to let u kno i wasnt exaclty a Harvard grad when it came to knowing th car either.
upon exiting after a fun bit of driving in my first week of ownership, i was wonderign how to pop the hood an i remembered the odd lil lever that u pull by the driver seat. i pulled it and the hood din pop so i looked forward where the hood release normally was and puzzled to find that the s2k had a "normal" hood release
---so after closing the hood
i was boggled as to wat that lil lever did, it wasnt for my hardtop, not for my trunk, nor my hood. what special lil thing did it do
so i casually locked up the car and went upstairs, happend to pick up my owners manual and look under the interior detail and labeling of interior knobs n components of the car.
within minutes i was running back down stairs and outside to close my gas door with owners manual in hand, smacking myself in the head and repeating
"Gas release, Gas release, Gas release!"

guys, i dont think honda intended for this to be a "secret compartment". its latch (to open it) is in plain sight. when i showed one of my friends the compartment and told him that people call it "secret", he laughed because what else would the latch be for? there's a trunk button and a latch; cant take that long to find out what its for, right?

I didn't notice the latch right away, it took 2 weeks ha. I saw it when I was sitting down in the car and facing the center box when I opened it thats when I saw the latch. Before I had the top down the whole time I would just open the box standing over it from the outside and just never noticed the latch inside.
