Default aftermarket steering wheel

I have seen many cars on the track have ditched the factory airbag, and went for aftermarket non-airbag steering wheels, what are the reasons of doing that? is it mainly for show? or it actually serves a functional purpose? Please enlighten me, thanks.

To allow the driver to get in/out of the car faster/easier due to installed racing seats; especially those with high bolsters like the Bride Gias.

if youve had the airbag deploy, why not get an aftermarket wheel.

i remeber someone once told me that air bags are dangerous when people are in racing driving position, because they are too close to the airbag, so instead of reducing the damage, airbags might actually injury the driver, does that make any sense?

my understanding is if you're in a racing harness, you don't need an air bag.

air bags are not legal in racing... its in the rule books. they must be removed or properly deactivated.

having the airbag deploy on you is about a step or two below a punch from Mike Tyson in his hay day. that shit sucks! the closer you are positioned, the harder the hit... and i have seen incidents of injuries similar to a rug burn at 100mph on your face.

Thats why I got mine since I had my Bride Zeta3 seats and full cage. It was a bitch to get in and out.

I was under the impression that people do it because it adds a more hardcore/race look and no doubt better steering feel...but im not sure if all the safety aspects are taken into account on many of these cars...instead looks maybe?
