Interesting ,
I did have confusion in 1989 when the local car plant I worked for started to put a big pipe over the rad to vent cold air.
& Whatever happened to 4 carbs on a 4 cylinder engine
Simple,just keep it simple

The modern equivalent is Individual Throttle Bodies, ITB. Its not that more carbs or more TBs means more gas goes in, more power. It just has better throttle response, since throttle plates are closer to cylinder.

Then that must be why Honda did not choose ITB's for the F20/22. They made a really well designed IM capable of achieving their power goals and got great engine response too.

This brings to mind a different engine that came stock with ITB's. According to what you said would that mean that Toyota didn't actually have to use ITB's on their 4AGE 20 Valve engine to get the power they got?

Sportscars are more about responsiveness than all out capability. Whether we're talking about hp, braking, handling.

ITBs and carb per cyl align with that responsiveness ethos. If an engine came from factory with ITBs it was probably for responsiveness. But it could have been for marketing.

The S has a well designed IM and manages to achieve good response without them (but there are kits for that if you want it). If you think about it, the time between when throttle change occurs and when that change reaches each cylinder differs for each cyl, owing to how far each cyl is from TB. Cyl 1 finds out about a throttle change first, cyl 4 finds out last.

Hmmm. Lack of throttle response? The stock throttle response is excellent. No?

No one said that its lacking. It is decent out of the box, but I have found its further enhanced with a larger TB, and of course further yet with some tuning and a lightweight flywheel. Some may find it too responsive after these mods in some conditions, if not used to it.

BMW has been all about ITBs from the factory.

S14 - E30 M3
S38 - E28 M5
S50 - E36 M3
S54 - E46 M3
S62 - E39 M5 (and Z8)
S65 - E90 M3

IMO, all of those motors sound awesome, and of the ones I have driven, throttle response has always been incredibly satisfying.

It's too bad ITBs are going the way of the dodo, just like carburetors. Everything is FI supercharger or turbo from the factory now... It makes me feel like an old fart they way old guys who loved carbs detested fuel injection - I feel the same way about everything switching from N/A to FI.

I was about to say, and all those motors sound wonderful, whether its the inline 6's or the E90 v8. The v8 is a real treat actually with 8 ITB's and high 8400rpms. Reminds me of something cross between a flat plane crank v8 and a old 4.7 liter overhead valve mustang GT.
