I agree with Sideways that this is a bad idea. However, my Lexus IS350 had a spring loaded valve inside the mufflers that would allow exhaust gas to bypass part of the muffler when flow was really high. It seemed to work fine, since it was very quiet, yet performed very well on the dyno.

I had experience with that type setup years ago. It failed and made terrible noises. Those things always break after a short while. Avoid moving parts in the exhaust.

These mufflers are similar to Motorcycle exhausts silencers. They didn't work very well on super sport bikes either because it dramatically changed the behavior of the bike. I would imagine it would do the same on cars.
