For those who drag race or at least know about it, is there a term called force shifting ?
can somebody explain how, when and why you do it ?

Considering that Google's number one hit on "force shifting" is this thread, it's pretty safe to say that no, there isn't such thing as "force shifting".

We're now all experts!

 

well how many kinds of shifting can we think of?

granny shifting - taking your sweet ass time but doing it right, back off gas - clutch in - shift gear - clutch out - back on gas

power shifting - clutch in - shift gear - clutch out (and better do if fast cuz you're on the gas the entire time!)

"force" shifting very well may be what someone is referring to as speed shifting without the clutch, where you just rip the car out of gear and slam it into the next without even touching the clutch (not really that great for your transmission if its not a dog box, but it can work).

I'm gonna assume that the OP is reffering to clutchless shifting as mentioned above. This will probably lead to transmissionless shifting as in when you get it wrong a couple of times, bye bye synchros. When I drove F2000's and Fcontinentals, we had streight cut gears and dog rings. One of the guys I raced with was telling me the gearbox in the Formula Fords we were racing could handle 1st-top gear WOT and NO lcuthc one time to get a better start (rolling starts). He ended up blowing through 2 transmission in the 2 races at Pocono that day.

After my first drive in a FF at my first racing school, I realised it IS possible to match revs and downshift without the clutch as well as upshift too, ut you had too lift as if you were clutching in. Driving to the hotel that evening I had a fellow student in the car who was trying to figure it out as he was grinding the gears so I showed him in my own car. It IS possible to shift without the clutch in a road car, BUT you have to be so F***ing precise with it that it seems like a waste of concentration to mee.
