Default Matt's AP1 Track Car: Project Mess2k

Hi all,

I just picked up my first s2k and will be using it as a dedicated track car. The car is a 2000 with 63k on the odometer, the color is NFR, I paid $11k. The previous owner began a track build but never made it to the track with the car. It needs a little work but it's a great start for me. I bought it with the following mods done:

Engine:
  • F20C with <2k miles on a fresh OEM rebuild
  • AP2 valve springs and retainers
  • K&N cold air
  • DC header
  • GReddy Ti-C single exit exhaust
  • Mishimoto aluminum radiator
  • Samco hoses
  • J's racing ECU
Transmission/Drivetrain:
  • Stock AP1 (<2k on new stockish clutch)
Suspension/Brakes:
  • Tein Mono coilovers
  • Rotora front big brake kit (330 mm)
  • Enkei 17x9 square setup
  • Dunlop 255/40/17 square
Exterior:
  • ASM wide front fenders
  • Shine ASM front bumper
  • ASM rear over fenders
  • VIS wing
  • APR splitter
  • Carbon hard top (unsure of brand)
  • VIS carbon hood
Misc:
  • Gutted (and I do mean gutted..) interior
  • Hard dog roll bar
  • Cobra racing seat (fits me perfect, it'll stay for now)
  • Scroth 6pt harness
  • Sparco wheel
  • Shift knob and some carbon interior bits
Extra parts given to me with sale:
  • 2 sets of buddy club seat rails
  • Spare alternator (needs to go in)
  • Misc interior pieces
  • Mishimoto thermostatic oil cooler

Plans:
  • Seat time
  • Seat time
  • Did I say seat time?
  • Proper coilovers, corner balance, alignment
  • Sway bars as needed to achieve the balance I want
  • Castrol SRF fluid
  • R888Rs or NT01s
My plans are kind of vague right now. In the long term, I'd like to bring the hp/weight ratio close to what my ZL1 1LE was.. something like 350 whp should be sufficient.

Nice purchase! Looks like the previous owner got 90% of the way there. Like you said, needs proper coilovers and tires.

As far as power, I have 366 whp and at Daytona the ZL1 1LE's left me in the dust like I was driving a stock Miata. I was frankly shocked at how far Chevy has come.

You literally stole this car, I’m calling the police.

What a find. That looks like a perfect setup for the track! Enjoy your seat time.

I would replace the DC headers with real ones but that's me. Nice car almost track ready
I'm very happy with mine but I am tuned https://www.balladesports.com/produc...haust-manifold

I'd say NT01's are even better than 200TW street tires for casual track days. They handle heat a bit better and they have a very gentle progressive breakaway. With RE01R's, the tires get so greasy after 2-3 laps, I have to do a cool down lap. Wastes precious seat time when you've got 20-minute sessions.

With FI speeds I could see getting 200tw greasy but you have to really maintain the limit every corner to get the good 200tw tires greasy with NA power. Traffic almost ensures a few cool down corners every session anyway. As someone learning a new platform the top performing 200tw segment is ideal. Set a baseline with 100% confidence first. Know you have a complete understanding of the car manners before signing up for the R-Comp variable. The setup is also less critical versus R-Comps. I only lose a second at most throughout the session on RE71R.

I don't hope to match the ZL1 1LE, moreso close the gap in straight line speed on larger circuits such as Circuit of the Americas. The smaller tracks shouldn't be much of an issue.

Thanks! I was surprised the seller was asking so little but it seemed he really needed to get rid of it.

I'll probably leave the header until I get a turbo setup. Thank you for the link, though. If I decide to stay NA or go supercharged, I'll scrap the DC header for sure.

I'll get a feel for the car on these Dunlops then decide what to do. I've got plenty of experience on 100 tw and did run slicks on my ZL1 1LE (although it was mostly to save money on tires). I preferred 100 tw tires on that car, but it was much heavier so the s2k might be a different story. We'll see.

I hear you on wasting track time. That's always frustrating.

Fair point. The ZL1 1LE and GTR I had before it had no problems getting 200 tw tires greasy in a hurry, but again, they are much heavier cars and vastly different platforms. Luckily tires are so cheap for the s2k that I won't feel too guilty doing some experimenting

I see you are in Dallas, I’m in Austin, let me know if you sign up for a weekend at COTA I’ll join. Always fun to have a similar car to see how the runtimes shake out. Also edge addicts does some pretty cheap days out at MSR Cresson but on Friday’s and Monday’s- like $200 for 3 hours of track time. I’d like to do a day there in March or April perhaps we can meet up out there!

I may try to sneak down to COTA sometime this spring. I ran my ZL1 1LE there what a blast that track is! I've run many events with Edge Addicts, I was at most of their Monday events last year and plan on doing the same this year

Updates on the car:
  • Drilled holes and placed eye bolts for the anti-sub belt anchor points on the driver's side, didn't get around to doing the passenger side yet
  • Put hose clamps on a few vacuum lines that were missing them
  • Got sandwich plate installed, oil lines made up, but couldn't tighten the sandwich plate because I need a 27mm socket
  • I pulled off the weather lining for the VIS carbon hood.. the intake looked like it was going to be starved for cool air otherwise. Thinking I will add some thermal tape to the outside of the box at some point
  • Fixed driver's side seat slider
Still need to do:
  • Change brake fluid with Castrol SRF
  • Wire up 12V port so I can plug in my lap timer
  • Make sure tail lights are working properly. Previous owner converted to AP2 and it's quite an ugly hack job. As of now, I don't think I have running lights in the rear.
