Default New engine or bore out current one?

my #1 piston is apparently scored all to hell. It is at JE Import who called me last night to tell me the great news.

Anyway..... now i have some choices

my engine has ~10k miles on it.

a - rebuild mine and get it bored out .020 over (or so) which is legal.... in theory that should add more power... not sure if i can find honda pistons with higher compression (not sufe if that is legal). - No clue how much $$$$

b - new short block from honda - $2800? plus install....

c - entire new/used engine swap from ebay or a recycler... ~ $3500 plus install for an engine with ~25k miles.

What would you guys do?

I am going to call hardtopguy to see if he has any good (cheap) stuff laying around that would help me.

why did #1 fail? oil starvation? I have 75k miles on my s2k and its still going strong.

Are you handy with tools and have the helm service manual and have the right tools? if so, take out the engine yourself and take the block and have it rebored? if not, used engine or new shortblock would be cheaper then having a mechanic take out your engine and rebore it and put it back in.

it is already out at the shop...... i am not handy..... i am looking for the best "bulletproof" engine.... my car is racing only..... no idea why my car did this, but the guy has another 2001 s2000 in his shop with the exact same problem.

I could just buy a used engine, but I want to make sure this thing will last an entire season with ease.

Did you put in the new banjo bolts, or do you still have the old ones with flow problems? Perhaps that is part of your problem, since it is an '01.

Regarding a., I was under the impression that you could not bore this engine that much without sleeving.

My car was 100% stock so it didn't have any new bolts.....which is probably why it did this..... i didn't know of any problems until yesterday.... blaaaa....

Honda makes a .025 overbore piston for our motor - so that shouldn't be an issue.

The bigger question is how deep the scores are in #1. They may be too deep to bore the cylinder.

Scot - PM me a number I can call you at :-)

When Honda says (OS 0.25) they mean .25 millimeters, which is actually a .010 overbore, which they consider the first standard overbore. Not sure they make anything bigger than that.

Honda doesnt make anything bigger, and you can't use a aftermarket piston without a resleave. The FRM walls don't like most aftermarket JE or whatever brand pistons.
