Weight!

I've got a pneumatic grinder, but the cutting wheels are pretty thick and it takes forever to cut through sheetmetal.

Before you go and cut your door apart you might want to check the rule book (I'm assuming your building this for W2W racing). The 2 sanctioning bodies I

The nascar bars are probably heavier that whatever you can gut out of the door. With the X-brace, make sure you don't remove the OEM door bars. As Ry said, they add some protection. When I crashed my yellow car at 70-90 MPH sideways into a tirewall against concrete (T10 at Sears), the sheetmetal was folded over the door bars, but the door still opened and the power window still worked! The rear quarter that hit concrete tore to pieces (suspension, half-shafts etc.).

I left the OEM bars in. I just gutted the passenger door (but left the bars in)...and someone had posted somewhere that gutting the doors shaves off 127lbs. Sounded like a crazy amount, but 63 per door...well that doesn't sound too unreasonable....until I weighed everything I pulled out....a measely 14 lbs! Grrrr. WTF? Am I missing something? Seeing as though I drive my car to events I'm not sure if gutting them was worth it.

Oh and FYI--Yeah...it was a bitch pounding the right side of your trunk lid back into shape so I could bolt it on my car, Richard.

The whole door including window probably doesn't weigh 63 lbs. Well, maybe, but not the guts alone.

Good to hear that my yellow car lives on in yet another racecar!

But whether its an X-bar or a Nascar bar, both offer way more protection than stock, so I'm happy.

NSACAR bars are easier to get in and out of and allow more space. They are heavier because there are 3 bars instead of just two so figure 1/3rd more. I wouldn't trust anyone's advice (especially here) as to structural strength. We can talk all day long about little shit but structural engineering with life altering (or ending) consequences should be left to professional structural engineers. I wouldn't design and build my own parachute either. IMO of course.

Yup...Not sure who posted the info on the weight of the door in the first place, but there's nothing I can do about it now. Passenger window is now bubblewrap.
