At Thunderhill - shifting problems at speed

Default At Thunderhill - shifting problems at speed

Hey guys.

I'm out with SCCA at Thunderhill right now and first practice didn't go so well. I had all sorts of problems shifting down or up in gears 3-4-5. Didn't try 2nd on track. Sometimes the 5-4 downshift would go ok but not always. I couldn't even get into 5th reliably on the straight. I'm sure the clutch was fully depressed each time.

Other clues:
- clutch fluid full and clean and was bled last winter
- haven't checked tranny fluid yet as I don't have a big enough socket. Can ask around the paddock for that.
- car shifts fine around the paddock in gears 3-4-5 at revs < 6k. I didn't try high-rev shifting cause I couldn't really get enough speed for that safely.
- clutch engages when the pedal is almost fully released
- clutch is not stock - don't know which aftermarket one tho and was installed by SoS several years ago

Qualifying at 1:30p PDT!

Checking tranny fluid first, then clutch pedal adjustment.

Someone need to be down there and check the slave while you press the clutch pedal. See if the slave has full range and not leaking.

Good idea.

Also, when I was adjusting the pedal I noticed that the boot was leaking. See attached file. It looks like it's been leaky for a while as there's a minor mess on the floor below it.

the method to fix the leaky pedal is to every 1k miles or so, remove the fluid in the reservoir, wipe the reservoir clean with a paper towel, then refill. you shouldn't need to bleed for that. after a while it will stop leaking

You have a bad/leaky master cylinder. I'm afraid there are no correct fix other than replacing the unit

Do you think that's causing the shifting problems? I wOuld guess no since the car shifts fine in the paddock.

Definitely. You shift faster on track, so the problem magnify.
