While someone was ragging on F-body durability i wish I had found this thread, lol. I think it says a lot about the misconception that some import owners have about the F-body cars. ANY CAR! will fall apart if you dont service it. This thread is a great example of how long most F-bods last if you DO the maintenance (oil changes, ect.) that are normally done.

As you see, LOTS! of people beat the everloving PISS out of 150+ K LS1's and they are fine. Some are even cammed and smack 7K rpm every day.

LS1's with no problems and over 100k miles, must be factory freaks.

Actually it is pretty common. We had one at my dealership that I later saw run 13.3@105 an it was an automatic 98 Z28 with just a weld-in muffler. 113K miles at time of said run. No tune up and shitty tires.

Another example is the 00' TA that the guy next to me in the appt. complex owns. He has 90K miles and the only issue he has is a HUGE vac. leak. It is his fault. He never maintains it. Dirty, ect. ect. ect. and he hits speed bumps like its a demolition derby. His car is still reliable, just not "nice".

My 95 TA had 170K miles and at 140K the previous owner did the tranny/axle/tq converter (I think he was doing neutral drops to blow the tq converter AND tranny AND axle...) The motor ran great till the day I sold it and it had a TON! of shit. I changed oil with 15-40 Rotella T every 500 miles and it looked like pudding in the filter it had so much shit in it for the first 5K miles. Proves it wasnt taken care of mechanically very well although teh car itself was very clean.

These are just the cars I know personally. I am sure if I thought hard I could think of more. F-bodies usually go for a good while. What gets them is low-oil and someone spins a bearing, someone misses a shift VERY BAD, things like that. Not a fault of the car. 200K miles is not out of the question, one guy did it on 1 clutch. THe OEM stock one that it rolled off the assy. line with.

With out a doubt the Ls1 is one of the top 5 engines ever, but chevy's reliabilty overall is not great. In the end owner maintenance will determine how long an engine last, more so then build quality.

+1

Yes, GM made a few mistakes. The big, heavy doors. The frame-less windows. Some people hate the dash b/c it CAN crack, but its VERY easy to replace (the top is a separate piece that all but lifts out and that is what cracks). The 7-5/8 rear end is only so-so but most people dont have too much trouble with it stock and when you mod you need to do other things with pretty much every car out there.

Overall though, they did pretty good inho. They have a car with a pretty stiff chassis for its size. GREAT! hp/$$. Good looks (SS/TA models, although some ppl like the Z28 too and its all preference really, but it looks better than the mustang imho and that is what they were trying to beat).

BTW. 28mpg on roadtrips makes me smile. 300whp stock and 28mpg is kinda rare in the sports car world.

I love the gas mileage I get outta my GTO. I have been using the dash computer to keep track of my mpg over the past 10 tanks. I average about 19.6mpg. I think thats spectacular considering that I have a 350hp engine under the hood

So far I usually end up with 1/2 tank of gas after 200-220 miles (depending on how much is highway). I dont know how much I get to a full tank, probably in the high 300 range. On road trips I average 26.5mpg 70-85mph driving. I took it easy once over 150miles on a trip and logged 27.5 for that interval.

The trade-off are all the funny noises coming from under the hood and the .75qts of oil I use every 3K miles. It's worth the extra 25 or so whp to me though (about what the short-skirt light weight pistons and low-tension oil rings and roller fulcrum rockers give me, TY GM!

Also an aluminum block amplifies noise badly. Ever notice how your LS1 has lifters tapping and all if you listen close? and LT1's dont? They use the same lifters. Aluminum just transfers sound WAY! better than cast iron.
