RX7 or S2000
Wavelet, first the R6's redline is 15,500 rpm, and the R1's is much lower due to a bigger engine (more rec. mass), not does it need many revs.
I'm not so sure about sportbikes being cheaper to operate. Mine costs $200/yr. more to insure, and I can expect 2-3,000 miles out of each set of tires, $250+/pair. Gas mileage during easy breakin was only 30.5 miles the first tank.
Who cares, though, the S2000 can't touch it in terms of adrenaline production!

It depends what you want in a car. Personally, I think if you are not happy with the S2000 stock, then don't get the car. It doesn't respond too well to mods, especially when compared to turbo charged cars. Forced induction costs an arm and a leg, and even then, it might not be enough power for you. I've seen many SC Stooks losing to numerous cars, most of them with stock internals still. The RX-7 bar-none is a better all around sports car. However, if you want a nice reliable, convertible to cruise around with and has decent pick up once you get high into the powerband, go with the S2000. While I rather have an RX-7 or even my own Mr2 to blast through the mountains, the S2000 has one hell of a stiff chassis for being a convertible. It's all about preference. I don't buy a car because "chicks dig it", so a convertible doesn't appeal to me too much. If I was worried about picking up chicks I would personally get a BMW, Audi, or a Mercedes, not a Honda or a Mazda or a Toyota. The S2000 isn't a car for me. It lacks in a lot of areas for me and moreover, there are tons of them in the Irvine area now. Also, I wouldn't get an S2000 to be original, because it's not a big deal to see these cars anymore. FD3s are still rare man, and they have the most unique engines in the world and whoever thinks they look outdated is smoking crack. The consensus across all car groups is that the RX-7 is still perhaps one of the most beautiful cars that ever came out of Japan. One thing is for sure, if you are into straight line performance, do not get the S2000.
You can have leather put over that carpet there fo pretty cheap...
AT first, I did not like the interior either, but its something that grows on you. I love it now. Its perfect, everything is positioned perfectly for the driver. It looks like an interior that will not outdate anytime soon.

If you want a roadster get the S2000, its the worlds best. If top performance is your goal, The RX-7 does everything else better.
RX7
exceptional Handling
great acceleration
torque
exotic looks
Rare
easy to modify
S2000
convertable
good looks
good handling
decent acceleration
Its all in what you want. BOTH are great cars.

To the original poster,
Going from a fast car to a slow car, you are going to feel difference (to Honda's credit, not by much). From my understanding of RX7,SUPRA,300zx and any high powered/torque drivers, the result usually ends in disappointment.
Note that the FD is a very light car, same as the S2000. The S probably drives the same as the FD (has that go-cart feel without the rush).
I believe you just want something new to replace the FD. Have you been modding your car? If so, then I think that you either want to give up modding your cars and just drive a new car. The S could be a nice car for you. Some people have suggested the Z but that's a totally different kind of car.
If you are the type of person that will go into modding your cars again, then I think you better pick something like a Supra, Porsche or something along those lines.
Because if you do get smoked by that FD, Supra, Z or whatever, you wished you had your FD again :-)
Also note that if you're not interested in the Miata, then the S may not be for you since they are similar cars.
Just my opinion.

I gave up 1/2 the HP I had in my Supra TT, and don't regret it at all. Sure, that acceleration is addictive, but the S2000 has plenty of aspects (convertible, flickability, body rigidity, ownership cost, etc.) that better the Supra.
Unless your ego is so fragile that you need to beat people to feel good about you and your car, the S2000's visceral experience is hard to beat IMO!
