FWIW, i also sat in an RX8, and without expecting much, was blown away.

Hi - I am new here, trying to decide whether to buy a 2003 or wait on the 2004. I own a 500 HP 2003 SVT Cobra right now.
My understanding is the following, not from the dealer, but from a source at Honda (I am an SAE member, and auto journalist part time):
1) The engine will be stroked to 2.2L
2) There will be more torque, lower in the rev band and peaking earlier as well
3) Red line will drop below 9000
4) Engine PCM will have revised spark and fuel maps
5) No mention of HP change
6) Car suspension will be made softer
HP is of course a high RPM thing, and relates more to top speed than acceleration, which is torque driven. I would expect that the 2.2 will accelerate faster, due to the torque increase and bandwidth. I would predict that peak HP would stay the same.
Look forward to participating and contributing:

physics, tribilogy (lubrication), and EE.
Plus general automotive, held an SCCA Class C license for many eyars.
Sounds like they are "softening" the car a bit - I would give a few pounds of twist to keep the great, razor like handling. They make be appealing to a widfer demographic, which from a sales perspective often means an older target, who likes "easy to drive" cars. Not sure this is a step in the right direction.
If it is a stroker, redline has to drop, since the piston starts to waddle a tad as it reaches its highest point.

i'm not saying this is set in stone... just that this is what i was told. gotta admit, it sounds appealing...
i have repeatedly seen the S get 0-60 times of around 5.3 sec. this is obviously with frying the clutch...
by moving the power down the rpm range, the new S may be quicker -- not to mention the added hp. even if the new car doesn't shave .4 sec in acceleration, it will certainly make it easier to achieve the low 5's without dropping in at high revs...

Did you say 4's???
not to mention the 240 horse 9k rpm model is already at 5.3...

Dealers will tell you there is a PORT-A-POTTY in the trunk if it'll peak your interest and get you back.
