As long as the oil is recycled there is minimal environmental impact, so the only real negatives are cost, the time it takes, and the wear and tear on the drain bolt. The odds are slim that improved engine life or performance will be seen (compared to the normal maintenance schedule) but no one can say for sure without a real study.
In all my street vehicles I change the oil every 5000 miles. Unless it is being stored then I change it every six months. But the ATV gets changed once a year. In the racecar I change it once a year or whenever I blow the motor up
But the racecar only gets run like 5 or six weekends in a year.

Every 3750 miles.
I have a '93 Accord with 114,000 miles that runs as good as the day I bought it. I always bring it to a Honda dealer (whose service department I trust) for scheduled maintenance (which includes an oil change) every 7500 miles. Half-way though each 7500 mile interval (3750 miles) I get just an oil change.
This has worked well for me with my Accord (I have never been towed or needed any emergency repair) and I have continued this same routine with my S2000.
I also change the oil in my '86 Toyota Celica (172,000 miles and still driven daily) every 3750 miles and have done so since it was new. This car never has had any scheduled maintenance besides oil changes and I only get any other work done on it, when it stops running completely (now about twice a year).

Oil is the cheapest protection that you can buy for a car. I may be obsessive, but I change mine about every 1000 miles. Even with Mobil 1 that is not much cash. I know I can sleep better at night.
