Which air filter? There are two.

I bought a K&N intake for the engine - about $50 at any auto parts store and you can clean it each year rather than replace it outright like the OEM paper cone (should be about $30 - where are you seeing $90!!??).

The cabin air filter I bought online from handa accessories.

You can probably benefit from changing both.

Yes, drop in (slide it on actually), then you buy a recharge kit (oil) and clean it annually. Saves money after 1 yr.

It helps keep the cabin from smellin like crap when you got air going if theres anything outside the car or if you smoke inside the car, keeping the filter fresh will help eliminate some of that smell. Not sure if the cabin filter works on all modes from the HVAC controls but perhaps someone could enlighten you.

Just a side note for everyone but filters FILTER better when they are dirty. This increases its filtering efficiency up until the point that it reaches its saturation point and starts blowing debris through.

As far as the engine air filter goes this point is pretty much null and void since you want as much air going through as possible, tiny particulate is generally not harmful, however the cabin filter benefits from being dirty as it helps filter more. Just make sure it doesnt get too dirty and cause too much of a pressure drop and hence strain on the blower motor

Here's a DIY thread about changing the cabin air filter:

https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=145495

For some reason I can't see the pictures at the moment.

Anyway, I got it from the FAQ/DIY section in the Under the Hood Forum.
