Hi all,

The CR-V has the same defrost feature as the S2K. I did the following steps (from a CR-V forum) so that I can turn off the AC manually during defrost mode. I haven't had a chance to try this on my S2K because I don't drive it too often recently due to the beautiful weather we're having!!!

Hope this was helpful.

==========

Many 2002 CR-V owners have found themselves at odds with the factory settings for the use of A/C along with the defroster. The steps outlined below do not change the A/C default, but they do make it possible to turn the A/C off after engaging the defroster.

First, we should take a look at the reasoning behind this... The process of air conditioning removes moisture from the air. This dry air works better for removing fog from the windows. To assist with defrosting, Honda has "programmed" the CR-V's HVAC system to engage the A/C whenever the defroster is turned on. The trouble is, you cannot turn it off.

To deactivate automatic a/c feature on 2002 CR-V:

1) Turn vehicle off.
2) Turn fan knob off.
3) Turn temperature knob all the way to the left (blue area).
4) Turn vent knob to panel only setting (next to max a/c).
5) Hold down both air recirculation button and a/c button while starting car.
6) Continue holding for 7 seconds until air recirculation button stops flashing.

To reactivate automatic a/c feature on 2002 CR-V:

1) Turn vehicle off.
2) Turn fan knob off.
3) Turn temperature knob all the way to the left (blue area).
4) Turn vent knob all the way to the right (defrost position).
5) Hold down both air recirculation button and a/c button while starting car.
6) Continue holding for 7 seconds until air recirculation button stops flashing.
7) After the 7 seconds described in step 6, the recirculation button will start to flash. Continue to hold the button for another 7 seconds. After this, the a/c light will turn to green and it's finished!

EXTREMELY helpful!! Got my wife the 2002 CRV. Honda should have had this info in their manual.

I have an '01 S2000 so I don't have this annoying AC issue, but I'm going to give this info to my friend who just got an '03 Suzuka (lives in Olney, BTW).

Thanks

Amazing, it works on the S2000 and it's permanent!!!

I edited the how to in red for what I did.

This definitely needs to go into the FAQ/How-To's

COOL

I am so glad it works!!!! I will have to try it on my S2K. The funny thing is that I knew about this for the CR-V almost a year ago. I just don't drive the S2K often enough recently to notice the defrost with A/C as an annoyance.

Yes, you can now hit the a/c button and the light and a/c will go off. This only applies to 2002+ models as 2000/2001 were already like this. Essentially, you would now have the same setup as a pre 2002 model.
