People have used reinforcing tape to prevent future wear.

The metal burr just needs to be filed down...shitty welding. Apparently the top can't be repaired once torn though. :-\

i had a shop here tell me that it'll just tear the first time its put down if they patch it... so i took it to the honda dealership and set an appointment for them to look at it, the guy told me honda might give me something like a "goodwill discount" since its low miles (less than 20k on an '05)

My 06 is definitely starting to.
...and they replaced it. Now I just have to get the rivet pieces out. They blasted one piece out with compressed air but there's still at least another in there.

As coincidence would have it, I just picked mine up from the Dealer today, they replaced it all under warranty, 06 2k miles. Mine had a rip on the passenger side, plus both sides had pressure marks where the top was being pushed against the frame when down.

Have to say dealer was excellent about it, no quibbling whatsover and gave me a loan car whist mine was being done.

Just need to figure out how to prevent the same thing happening to the new one, time to go searching.....

Actually mine was torn in the front passenger side and the indents each side were forward of where the driver and passger head would be. Maybe the wear on mine was something different.

Any attempt at prevention might be the only way to stop these rips. It apparently occurs within all model years and there is no one who can say that their car will never have this problem.
Attempt to re-inforce all areas from the inside and make these re-inforcements as asethetic as possible-i.e. use materials on both sides of the top in symetrical patterns to hide the fact that the top has been re-inforced. I think if done right, no one but the owner would ever know.

Well the dealer has agreed to replace my at no charge to me. Glad they decided to be nice about it. I'm going to have them file things down and make certain this won't happen again.

I'll likely still call Honda corporate to let them know it is NOT just 2006+ models (per the Tech Line bulletin).

For anyone interested, it's Continental Honda in Countryside, IL. Steve McKay was the service manager who was so great about everything.
