Speculation has been that Honda subscribes to the automotive 1/2/4/8 formula which means Every year, offer different model colors, Every two years, offer modest superficial changes, Every four years, modest redesign, and Every eight years, major platform redesign.

On August 26, 2002 Automotive News released a report outlining future products from each of the Asian manufacturers. The report said the S2000 would receive restyling and re-engineering with 2005 model year.
