First off the V-1 is not the end of all end in detection (please PM Yellow S2000....pisses him off). I would suggest a $600.00 SR-! unit.....COMPLETELY PASSIVE.....NO RADIATION OR BLEED OVER which is the sourse of detection.

I was stopped in Virginia 4 years ago with an escort detector by the state police. He asked to see my radar detector and I let him have it. He took a look at it and gave it back to me. I asked him why he needed to see it and he said that they keep records of the models of detectors that the VG-2 responds to. I got a ticket for "improper equipment" which is not a "moving violation". This means that it won't cause my insurance premium to increase. And it was a $50.00 fine.

This is much better than getting a ticket for speeding as this is a moving violation and it will result in an increase in you insurance premium. Not to mention the cost of the speeding ticket that is
prorated on how much above the speed limit you where doing.

Which in an S2000 can go up very quickly!!!

I currently run a V-one in my supercharged V-6 Toyota Tacoma 4x4, and an SR-1 in my S2000, which by the way, I purchased on the internet and installed myself. I would not recommend installing the SR-1
yourself, as I had to remove the whole front bumper to do a proper install, unless you are familiar with
this type of work on cars.

VA is a "police state" ---
I'm surprised any of you put up with it

I use the V-One in my truck that has a 3" lift on it. It is mounted next to the rear view mirror. I have the
remote module under the radio in the middle console part of the dash so that the receiver lights do not
operate when there is an alert. Virginia state police just love to sneak up behind you and hit the radar
to see if there are lights visible from the rear. Plus, people tend to ride on your butt if they see the lights.
I guess they think that can use your detector for free!

Anyway, I get far more alerts from the V-One than the SR-1. Most of the alerts on the V-one are not real
radar. Just door openers or alarm systems in buildings and stores that you pass. I think that the fact that
the V-one is mounted about 4 feet higher than the SR-1 and can "see" more, contributes to this difference.

The SR-1 has given me ample time to slow down if there is radar ahead, and also if it is coming up behind me. You have to pay attention as you have to rely on the reflected radar signal off of highway
signs of other big metallic objects like tractor trunks in front of you. The SR-1 does not have a rearward
looking radar dome. The best thing about the SR-1 ,for me, is that is very stealthy in the hostile environment of Virginia anti-radar detector law. There was no way I could mount the big V-One without
it being noticed at the time that I made a decision about what to run in the S. Since then I have seen
clever ways to mount the V-One, Ala Rick hesel, and one that cost about a thousand dollars!! And I still
have to wonder about the reduction of the performance of these installations when the instructions on
the V-One point out that just by mounting the receiver behind the stock tint that comes on windshields
you are reducing the effectiveness of the receiver. I am in no way claiming to be a radar expert but I do tend to believe the manufacturer when they actually admit the weaknesses of their products

Bottom line, I am very happy with the set up I have now with the SR-1 on the S. You have to remember
these units are only as good as the operator behind the radar detector. You can have the best detector in the world and still get a ticket if you do not pay attention at all times!

Banger-

Thanks a million for the info. Last question: How long does an SR-1 install take?

speedyclip-

Overall VA is a very nice place to live - the radar detector game isn't enough to make me move (or drive slower). :-)

It took me about 4 hours, but I had to go to the hardware store
to get some screws, and I didn't have a helms manual or any
kind of guide as to where all of the bumper mounting points where. So it was exploratory surgery and I took my time.

And yes I kind of like VA. Plus the radar cops are pretty relaxed
here as they don't have to worry about people running radar detectors, so they usually leave it on all of the time when they
have set up a trap, but not always! It's easier to detect them
compared to say a NC cop. I've seen them cruising around and
popping the instant radar on and off as they come around the
corner or over a hill towards you. Not only that but they are in
unmarked camaro's. I think they have to play aggressive games
with radar because they know that a lot of fast drivers have the
detectors as they are legal in NC.

And if they pull you over, but can't find your radar detector? (for instance if you just wire up a piece of crap in a hidden spot just to spite them)

Or how about if you legitimately create a device that uses similar technology and broadcasts similar waves- wouldn't that piss them off. :-)

I guess the only thing that makes me nervous is that the Escort site says the SR-X has complete VG-2 immunity, but the SR-1 page makes no mention of it.

Would I need to be concerned about VG-2 if I went with the SR-1?
