Default To auction or not to auction? That is the question

Greetings folks! I'm looking into buying a car can came across an auction. I'm really not sure about this method of buying. Can any of you share any car auction experiences? Whether good or bad, I'd like to hear/read from you.
Another thing, I've noticed some vehicles have salvage titles, if I'm not worrying about reselling, do you thing it's a big deal?

My dad used to be a car dealer and i've got a few friends in the car business and they buy a lot of used cars at auction. If your going to be able to resell the car at auction if its a lemon then go for it. If its for your personal car be very careful.
A lot of pieced together sh-t goes through the blocks every day. If your not mechanically inclined I might ask a friend who knows about cars to go with you. Still no real guarantee though. Good luck
