OK, let's say you saw an S2k for the first time in a showroom and there was no Honda badge or financial information available, just a performance spec sheet and results of head-up competition with other roadsters.
Would you estimate the roadsters price at more or less than $42,500 US, knowing the price of Z3's / M3's, Boxsters and SLK's.

I was on several lists to buy one before the MSRP was announced. I was 'in' up to about 38K.

17 months ago I paid 35K (Jan 2000) and really couldn't believe this much car was less than $42,000

Without seeing numbers other then the typical published stuff (0-x accels, 1/4 mile, top speed, 70-0 braking) I would probably say it is a $25000 car, tops. Throw in some track lap times that show just how good it corners, brakes, and accelerates, mention the weight and high-tech parts, etc, and then I'd agree that you could argue the $40k estimate.

At least that is how I view it...

Like Chris I was "on the list" prior to the price announcement, and would have gone to 37K without any questions.

Given the superior performance parameters of cars costing $20K+ more, and its good looks, not knowing it's a Honda would have made me guess a price much higher than its MSRP.
