I was on my way out last night, minding my own business when a challenge pulled up next to me. A black late model civic coupe with a Greddy exhaust, some sort of rims, lowered, you know, the usual.

I initially passed on the challenge, but after a few minutes of him trying to get me going, I gave in.

We took off from about 65, and I quickly realized that it was not an ordinary civic. He did really well. By about 130, I had 5 or so car length on him, so I hit the breaks.

And then it happened. I looked in the rear view mirrow, as I decided to slow down, and saw a huge "Pufff", and a cloud of smoke.
He blew his engine. I pulled off the highway with him, kind of feeling bad. He said that he just put the fully built up GSR motor in there a few days ago. Was supposed to break it all in. I guess he forgot that when he saw a beautiful white S2K on the road.

Blown challenge.

That is a shame, but, he should have known better. It would be like Vtecing with the stook after a few miles. You just dont do it!! His impatience will cost him pleanty including losing.

I felt kind of bad.
I mean, he should have know better, but the look on his face afterwards.
He got his ass whooped, and to top it off, blew his engine.

That was a stupid thing to do. I couldn't imagine racing at 130+ mph with a brand new engine. So did you help him out with a ride and show him what fast really feels like?

Maybe he should have watched the video of the Ferrari 456 blowing up first

I know. Break-in is important.
I couldn't give him a ride, because my girlfriend was with me, but I pulled off the highway to make sure he was ok, make sure he had a phone to call for help.

And about showing him what really fast is like, I think he got a glimpse of it, in my taillights.

I dunno...

It seems to me that hard driving during break-in will shorten the life of the engine and maybe turn it into an oil-pig in 50K miles, but it shouldn't blow it up. Unless he over-revved it (or broke his timing belt) and stuck his valves into his pistons, of course, but that has nothing to do with newness.

IMO it's more likely his engine-builder made a boo-boo.
