One would think an open filter would not be a good choice for the S2000 due to heat soak but with the ZTEC industries heat shield in place, I've found a good deal of those engine block temperatures (about 60-degrees worth) are kept on the block side of things. Not pictured (due to the angle) is the Coastal Metals engine plate air director which just so happens to have it's air hole directed straight into the filter so at speed, I'm getting a decent amount of air up into the engine bay, especially since I removed the front aftermarket grille when I found out just how much air restriction it was creating. This modified Comptech tube-Racing Akimoto filter intake kit I created has been the best set-up I've had on the car to date, at least according to my Tazzo unit. My 30-70mph runs in 3rd gear have been the fastest with this set-up and to date this summer I have not had one instance of low-rpm bogging (from heat soak). Not once. Last year, it was a constant nuisance. I'm still not done tinkering with it though and might buy the BMC carbon fiber airbox to replace the Akimoto (to compare) and if the Akimoto outperforms it, I'll proceed to the next step and buy the Akimoto Series IV filter (the one pictured below is the Series III). Either that, or wait until the group buy is offered on what was once known as the MG Racing carbon fiber intake. FWIW, the difference in all of these intakes is mostly bent on asthetics and sound. They're all probably within a few hp of each other. I have always preferred short ram intakes over long tube ones though because they flow at much higher rates. The Comptech tube was chosen because the air chamber helps to improve throttle response at high speeds and ALSO (the best part) seems to reduce low rpm bogging at the take-off due to the reservour of air inside. As for the sound at VTEC (because the filter is open) the best I can describe is it's insane, especially with the Supertrapp mufflers in the back. Definitely unlike any other S2000 wav. file I've heard. More race car than anything.
Plenty of innovation left for the S2000 engine bay though. I don't think we've seen the best intake offered just yet. There can be improvements in all of them. My .02
