Yea, I remember that... Thats when I got my first radar detector...

Most states in general ignored the law by not inforceing it. Then the Federal Government threatened to pull highway funds from the States to force compliance.

It was not a good time... A perfectly horrid example of the Government protecting us from ourselvs.

They have had 30 years to shape energy policy since then and did nothing.

This is the best our government can do? A truly sad day for us all.

We should raise city speed limits to 55 too, woo hoo, and remove all the stops, because our real MPG problems are in the city not the freeway.

This is the truest statement in this thread and I wholeheartedly agree.

I used to go around 65-70 in my mustang. But now I set cruise at around 60. Sometimes even 57. It's not that I'm afraid of driving it fast, it's just because - what's the rush? I know I would go about 75 if i was commuting for work or something, lol, but on just a weekend cruise to the city, I just don't feel the need to go 'fast.'
However, I'm sure if they set the limit at 55, people would go even slower, because I still have to pass people when I'm cruising 60.

The speed limit is 55 nearly everywhere i go anyway. Nothing will change for me.

The only speed limit that matters is the one that your gearbox enforces mechanically

I kid, but the best mileage i've ever gotten in this gar i was doing 70mph all day (29 MPG). When i first got this car and was doing 55-60 everywhere was a relatively close second (27MPG).

This is what happens when you drive 55 mph (speed limit on i-285) in Atlanta. Not good.
