It depends on a lot of factors. If your car is in good condition, low miles, and a desirable model you will do fine. They offered me a little over blue book for my 08 STI so I traded mine in there instead of selling it privately.

Sold my 2008 Mazdaspeed3 to them about 4 months ago. Had a friend look up current Manheim prices so I had some clue as to the going trade rate. Manheim high price was $15300 for my age/miles/GT package. Carmax gave me $15000 and off I went a happy guy. VERY pleasant process. Left same day with a check in hand.

It really depends on the trade in, and if it is modified at all. If you even have lowering springs it will drop the value dramatically. Sometimes it does work out in your favor though, a few months ago I was considering trading in my wifes yaris and getting a fit. The honda dealership wanted to offer us 6k for it, went down the street to carmax and they offered us 9k at the time. Ended up keeping the car and it's now out of warranty but it seems they drop the value substantially once it's out of warranty, recently they valued the car at 6500. I kinda wish I would've done the trade originally lol

i bought my s2000 from carmax. they have their own auction. when they have trade ins they are not sure about, they would sell the cars as is in their auctions to other dealerships.

Just curious, what's the advantage over a normal dealership? Are they like JD buy?

I work at carmax

older cars (like 04 and down), and junkers go to carmax auctions.

I bought my car from Carmax. My negative was that the windshield had a crack that I didn't notice until I drove the car home roughly 40 miles.

Other than that, their other S2k on the floor at the time, about 3 years ago, was missing the Vin sticker from the front bumper. That's about all the negatives I can say. My car has been problem free, though it was modified. I knew by the hood was obviously changed out at some point along with some other bolt/screws. Later on I found out the fenders were already cut. No biggie though.

I got mine from Carmax.
Had the car checked out by 2 different shops and it is clean.
Carmax was very easy to work with.
The price was what I'd call average. Not over price but not a bargain either.
Maybe could have gotten a lower price from a dealer or private owner but I was okay with that.
I would buy from them again.
